Overview

Class Support Substitute - Rural Uvalde, Brackettville, Sabinal, Campwood is a position that works in collaboration with center staff to greet parents, assist the Head Start Teacher in delivering the classroom curriculum in accordance with Head Start Program Performance Standards, licensing minimum standards, and agency guidelines. The Classroom Support Substitute is responsible for the care and supervision of children in alignment with these standards and agency requirements, incorporating the Social Determinants of Health through a trauma-informed care approach as defined by the agency.

The role focuses on establishing expectations, consistent rules, positive relationships, age-appropriate communication, respectful interactions, appropriate physical proximity, positive discipline, guidance, safety, and a positive experience for each child. The Substitute may move between classrooms or centers as assigned. This is a year‑round position.

• Greet parents and assist the Head Start Teacher in delivering classroom curriculum in accordance with Head Start Program Performance Standards, licensing minimum standards, and agency guidelines.
• Care for and supervise children in alignment with standards and agency requirements while applying trauma-informed care and Social Determinants of Health considerations.
• Establish clear expectations and rules in the classroom; build positive relationships with children; promote positive communication, appropriate proximity, respect, and positive discipline and guidance.
• Follow Head Start Program Performance Standards, licensing minimum standards, and agency protocols with a focus on safety and a positive experience for children; serve as a positive role model.
• Maintain supervision of children within Head Start Program performance ratios at all times.
• Assist in multiple Head Start classrooms and/or centers as assigned; move between classrooms/centers as needed.
• Perform duties as a year‑round substitute in accordance with program needs.

• Education –
  
  Required:
  
  High School or better.
• Experience –
  
  Required:
  
  1) High School Diploma or GED;
  2) Successful completion of the Family Service Smart Start for Teacher’s ANGELS Substitute Program;
  3) Current Pediatric CPR and First Aid Certification;
  4) Ability to implement appropriate teaching strategies and techniques;
  5) Fluent in English and Spanish (read, write, and speak) desirable.
