Substitute Teacher

A substitute teacher is responsible for enabling each child to pursue his or her education as smoothly and completely as possible in the absence of his or her regular teacher. A substitute teacher is responsible for carrying out the lesson plans of the regular teacher and meeting the duties of teaching as outlined in the policies of the school and Archdiocese of San Antonio.

The substitute teacher reports to the principal and is expected to:

  • Support and uphold the philosophy of Catholic education and the mission of the school
  • Act as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church
  • Support and adhere to the Religious Standards for Catholic School Employees and policies and procedures of the school and Archdiocese
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding school matters
  • Follow the lesson plan left by the teacher for whom he or she is substituting for
  • Meet and instruct assigned class or classes in the locations and at the times designated
  • Establish and maintain order in the classroom
  • Maintain a classroom environment conducive to effective learning

Important job functions include:

  • Using approved, corrective, and positive discipline procedures in dealing with inappropriate student conduct
  • Collaborating with school personnel to enhance the work environment and support academic programming

Knowledge, skills, and abilities required include:

  • Knowledge of the basic teachings of the Catholic Church
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form
  • Ability to work well with others in the school community
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Skill in organizing and relating information in an understandable format
  • Skill in job appropriate technology
  • Skill in critical thinking and planning

Working conditions include:

  • Managing high to moderate levels of stress
  • Working in standard school conditions

Mental/physical demands include:

  • Lifting or carrying athletic equipment and supplies
  • Maintaining composure and avoiding inappropriate displays of anger
  • Sitting, standing, bending, stooping, reaching, grabbing, pulling, hearing, seeing, and speaking on a daily basis
  • Performing repetitive physical tasks such as computer keyboarding, writing, and reading
  • Monitoring students in a variety of locations including those with noise, activity, and inclement weather

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Previous substituting or teaching experience preferred
