The role of the Special Education Reading Specialist is to provide high quality instruction, support, and collaboration in order to produce high quality outcomes in the area of Reading and Literacy for the students in the Uxbridge Public Schools with disabilities.
This position is considered “district-wide,” with a caseload that may include students in more than one building from one year to the next. In FY27, this position is assigned grades K‑5, sharing time in both Taft Early Learning Center and Whitin Intermediate School. This position reports to the Pupil Services Director, and is supervised and evaluated by the Pupil Services Director.
Responsibilities- Provide and/or assist with the identification and evaluation of students during the evaluation of any student who may have a disability (in accordance with state/federal guidelines and as identified in district practice)
- Implement a multi‑sensory systematic reading program/curriculum that is grounded in an evidence‑based methodology for students with identified disabilities in the applicable areas of concern
- Establish individual reading goals for students, including measurable benchmarks and methods of data collection
- Consult for special educators and general education teachers to implement additional supports in the classroom
- Collaborate with teachers in all departments to promote the learning and implementation of best practices in literacy instruction
- Create and examine data to measure the success of literacy programs and instruction
- Teach targeted literacy intervention to individuals or small groups of students daily using research‑based strategies and resources
- Review student achievement and assist with placing students in appropriate reading and writing intervention and support services, as appropriate, through collaboration with Team Chairs and building administrators
- Other duties as assigned and applicable to the role
- Appropriate Massachusetts DESE Licensure as a Reading Specialist required
- Special Education Certification, Moderate Disabilities (all levels) required
- Certification in a relevant multi‑sensory, science‑based reading curriculum required
- Bachelor’s Degree is REQUIRED;
Master’s Degree in an appropriate discipline is PREFERRED - Access to personal transportation is REQUIRED (this position is assigned to more than one building location)
