Job Description

Position Summary

The Special Education Team Chairperson for Whitin Intermediate School (Grades 4–7) (also known as the Evaluation Team Leader in other districts) shall preside over all Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings and evaluation team processes for Whitin students, as well as Whitin students placed in out-of-district programs. The Team Chairperson is expected to collaborate with the school community to foster a learning environment that enables all students to achieve their highest educational potential.

Job Functions
  • Serve as evaluation Team chairperson for initial referrals, re-evaluations, and annual IEPs for all Whitin students.
  • Assist the Director of Pupil Services in returning out-of-district students.
  • Assist the Director of Pupil Services in increasing inclusion programs.
  • Maintain accurate figures on caseload assignments for teachers and support personnel to assist in maintaining adequate staffing needs.
  • Oversee all IEP paperwork for assigned caseload and maintain organized and complete files.
  • Schedule IEP meetings, maintain electronic tracking logs, schedules, and calendars.
  • Assist general education teachers in making accommodations and modifications in curriculum and instruction.
  • Maintain compliance in all Special Education timelines and regulations.
  • Maintain compliance and standards of excellence for professional performance and program development.
  • Complete all reports and IEP documents on time.
  • Act as a liaison with outside agencies (DSS, DYS, DDS, DCF, DMH, private mental health agencies, private hospitals, etc.) that serve special education families.
  • Attend after-school meetings and Team Chair meetings, when requested.
  • Work cooperatively with the general education staff.
  • Build and maintain collaborative and communicative relationships with families.
  • Attend professional conferences and workshops.
  • Meet with principals, as needed, to discuss special education issues and regulations.
  • Establish by personal example a standard of excellence that will inspire others.
  • Assume other duties/responsibilities as directed by the Director.

  • Knowledge of special education regulations and compliance.
  • Maintain neat, orderly, and well-maintained student file folders according to the organizational system required.
  • Send in missed timelines on a monthly basis to the special education office.
  • Support the special education teacher in progress report writing, goals and objectives, and Power School data management.
Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • MA DESE Licensure in the Special Education field..
  • The candidate should possess excellent written and oral communication skills and demonstrate an ability to work flexibly and collaboratively with students, parents, and the multidisciplinary team.
  • He/she should have experience working with and/or teaching students with disabilities as well as knowledge and understanding of a range of disabilities and the related needs in an inclusive educational setting.
  • Candidates must have familiarity with Curriculum Standards as well as with formal and informal research-based assessments and interventions.
  • The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to inclusive pedagogy as well as to the vision of high expectations for achievement and equal access to high quality instruction for all students.
  • Bachelor degree preferred.
  • Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge and ability to implement 603 CMR 28.04 (Referral and Evaluation) and 603 CMR 28.05 (The Team Process and Development of the IEP).
