Job Description

Full-time district-wide nursing position for the  school year, assigned 85% of time to Taft Early Learning Center and 15% of time to Uxbridge High School. At UHS, this person serves as the primary responder for the Independence Project and provides medical coverage for community trips as planned by the Independence Project or the UHS Learning Lab. The district-wide nurse follows the Taft ELC teacher work day, 8:25 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., and is expected to attend Taft ELC faculty meetings in the same manner as all nurses assigned to a building.

This person is a provider of health related services at the school level and is an essential part of maintaining a healthy and safe school environment where all students can learn and make successful progress.

  • Completes health evaluations of students as required by district policy, the Department of Public Health, or IDEA.
  • Conducts mandated health screenings, including vision, hearing, growth, and postural screenings, in accordance with DPH guidelines.
  • Develops and implements Individualized Health Care Plans and Emergency Action Plans for students with chronic or acute health conditions.
  • Administers medications and treatments in accordance with DPH and district guidelines, including emergency medications such as epinephrine and glucagon.
  • Serves as the primary nursing responder for the Independence Project at Uxbridge High School, and provides medical coverage for community-based trips coordinated by the Independence Project or the UHS Learning Lab.
  • Consults with students, parents, administrators, and staff to explain health assessments, medical information, and care plans.
  • Maintains accurate and confidential health records and files in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Assists students, families, and staff in locating and accessing appropriate health services and community resources.
  • Monitors compliance with state immunization requirements, including follow up with families on outstanding records.
  • Supervises and trains volunteers and unlicensed staff who assist in the delivery of student health services, including medication administration training.
  • Collaborates with classroom teachers, special education staff, and Team members on health related accommodations for IEPs and 504 plans at both Taft ELC and UHS.
  • Works cooperatively with the school physician, outside providers, and community health agencies in the delivery of services.
  • Completes follow up on accident and injury reports with students and parents.
  • Provides in-service training to staff on topics such as allergy management, seizure response, and universal precautions.
  • Reports communicable diseases and other public health concerns to local and state health authorities as required.
  • Advises building administration and district administration on medical or health related issues as needed.
  • Completes plans, reports, and other documentation required by policy, regulation, or Medicaid billing for school health services.
  • Participates in the district nursing job-alike group and collaborates with the nursing team on staffing coverage across buildings.
Qualifications
  • B.S. Degree in Nursing; coursework in education or educational experience preferred.
  • Current, unrestricted Massachusetts RN license.
  • Massachusetts DESE licensure in the School Nurse category.
  • Pre-service experience working in a school or health service delivery environment preferred.
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification; trainer level preferred.
  • Willingness to serve on the schools  crisis team.
  • Working knowledge of Massachusetts school health regulations, mandated reporting requirements, and confidentiality standards (FERPA/HIPAA).
  • Strong oral and written communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • A valid driver s license, with willingness to travel between Taft ELC and UHS and to provide community trip coverage.
  • Computer skills including word processing, database management, and electronic health record systems.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with families, staff, and outside medical providers across an early childhood and a high school setting.
  • Physical requirements:

    ability to respond quickly to emergencies; lift up to 50 pounds; stand, walk, kneel, and bend; see, hear, and communicate clearly; perform CPR and use medical equipment (nebulizers, glucometers, AEDs).
