The UMass Synergy Service is an interdisciplinary ambulatory consultation service focused on the care of patients with complex needs related to pain, substance use, and addiction. We work in partnership with primary care clinicians and other outpatient providers, combining direct patient care with clinical guidance, care coordination, and practical support for the clinicians who know their patients best. Our philosophy is that caring for patients with complex pain and addiction requires a team.

Rather than replacing the patient's existing care team, Synergy works alongside outpatient clinicians, helping them develop the clinical tools, practical strategies, and confidence needed to navigate challenging situations and provide thoughtful, evidence-based care. Synergy serves patients across the lifespan, from pediatric through geriatric populations. We value a multimodal and individualized approach to care, incorporating pharmacologic, behavioral, rehabilitative, and complementary treatment strategies when appropriate.
