Sylvan Learning is seeking an enthusiastic and dependable Reading Tutor to help students strengthen their reading skills and academic confidence.
At Sylvan, we focus on building academic confidence, encouraging intellectual curiosity, and inspiring a love of learning. Our instructors work with students in a positive, structured environment using Sylvan's established curriculum, technology, and instructional materials.
The Reading Tutor will support K-12 students with areas such as phonics, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and literary analysis. Instructors may also assist students with school assignments, homework, and test preparation.
Required AvailabilityApplicants must be available during the following instructional hours:
- Monday, Tuesday, Thursday: 3:00 p.m.
-7:00 p.m. - Friday: 3:00 p.m.
-7:00 p.m. - Saturday: 9:00 a.m.
-1:00 p.m.
Actual scheduled shifts and weekly hours may vary based on enrollment, staffing needs, and student schedules.
Primary Responsibilities- Provide engaging reading instruction individually and in groups of up to four students.
- Teach phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and other assigned reading skills.
- Follow Sylvan's instructional methods, curriculum, and preplanned lessons.
- Help students understand reading assignments and prepare for classroom tests.
- Adapt explanations and support to each student's academic needs.
- Encourage students and help build their confidence and independence.
- Accurately document student progress and complete instructional notes.
- Use tablets and other instructional technology as required.
- Maintain a safe, organized, and positive learning environment.
- Complete all required Sylvan training.
- Strong reading, comprehension, and English-language skills.
- Ability to explain reading concepts clearly and patiently.
- Ability to work with up to three students completing different lessons.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience working with children or teenagers.
- Consistent availability during the required instructional hours.
- Reliable transportation to the assigned Sylvan center.
- Ability to follow established curriculum and center procedures.
- Ability to complete applicable background-screening requirements, consistent with state and local law.
- Bachelor's degree, teaching credential, current college enrollment, or relevant coursework in education, English, literacy, or a related area.
- One to two years of teaching, tutoring, or classroom experience.
- Experience teaching phonics, fluency, vocabulary, or reading comprehension.
- Experience supporting students with different academic needs and learning styles.
- Competitive pay of $18-$20 per hour.
