Surgical Technologist

Assists during surgical procedures by ensuring and maintaining the integrity of a sterile surgical field and providing instrumentation as needed to the surgical team. Participates in unit activities that assure high levels of quality related to patient care. Functions under the direction of a Registered Nurse. Possesses expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combines knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation of tools and technologies in the performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

Functions with working knowledge of standards and best practices. Maintains and checks all items for proper packaging, processing, moisture, seal and packaging integrity, sterile indicators if present, and expiration dates. Ensures that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Monitors the sterile field for events that may contaminate, interfere, or alter the field and initiates or notifies of the need for corrective action under supervision.

Works towards competency or is competent with Tier 1 surgical cases. Maintains flexibility while contributing to the individualized, ongoing delivery of care within the scope of practice. Models effective, timely communication with the perioperative team with full participation in the Time Out Process. Assists team in patient transports, room turnovers, and room preparation. Models professional behavior to include maintaining currency in new technologies and procedures, including instrumentation and equipment.

Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization. Role models the principles of a Just Culture. Performs other duties as assigned. Must be HIPAA compliant. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the functions of this position. Communicates effectively, clearly, and timely. Must be able to come to work promptly and routinely in order to begin job functions at the start of the scheduled shift to impact the patient's healthcare experience.

Ability to care for oneself; perform manual tasks; see, speak, breathe, learn, read, concentrate, think, communicate, and work are essential to perform this role in the organization. Ability to work under stress and to deadlines while working independently or with others. This position does provide patient care.
