Staff Associate – The Community Market

Employment Type:

Pay Range: $22.00 – $25.00 per hour

Position Summary

The Staff Associate plays a vital role in creating a welcoming, dignified, and supportive environment for all customers, volunteers, and coworkers at The Community Market. This entry‑level position focuses on daily market operations, customer service, volunteer support, and maintaining a clean, organized, and efficient market space.

The ideal candidate is friendly, reliable, team‑oriented, and passionate about helping community members experiencing food insecurity. Staff Associates help ensure smooth operations, build trust with customers, and contribute to a positive and inclusive market experience.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities Customer Service & Community Support
  • Greet all customers warmly and register them in the client database.
  • Provide exceptional customer service and build trust with community members.
  • Support a welcoming, dignified environment for all customers and volunteers.
Daily Market Operations
  • Keep shelves stocked, produce rotated, and market areas clean and appealing.
  • Maintain organized workstations, pallet areas, and storage spaces.
  • Assist with opening and closing procedures as needed.
  • Support mobile market operations, including customer registration and set‑up.
Volunteer Support
  • Orient volunteers and provide clear instructions for daily tasks.
  • Communicate and follow up with volunteers as directed by the Volunteer Coordinator.
Data & Reporting
  • Assist the Staff Lead with accurate and consistent data reporting, including:
    • Food rescue numbers
    • Waste tracking
    • Link2

      Feed applications
    • Logistics & Transportation
    • Assist with grocery rescues and donation pick‑ups.
    • Drive large work vans to transport inventory when needed (training provided).
Team Collaboration
  • Report operational or customer‑related issues to the Staff Lead.
  • Participate in scheduled staff meetings.
  • Support internal and external outreach events as needed.
Safety & Compliance
  • Promote workplace safety by maintaining orderly work areas and reporting hazards.
  • Complete Serv Safe certification (provided by employer).
  • Follow all food pantry policies and procedures.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong customer service skills and a positive, service‑oriented attitude.
  • Ability to build trust and work effectively with diverse communities, including Latinx community members.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to follow directions, stay alert, and work efficiently.
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Basic computer literacy (Google Docs, Excel) or willingness to learn.
  • Empathy, patience, and commitment to community‑centered service.
Education & Experience
  • Experience in food systems, grocery, warehouse, or customer service preferred.
  • No formal education requirements; training provided.
Working Environment & Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or walk for long periods.
  • Ability to load, unload, sort, and stock inventory.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to use office equipment, machinery, and market systems.
  • Must be available to work 40 hours/week, Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–6:00 PM.
