Responsibilities
- Perform heavy physical labor requiring frequent lifting and carrying of items and furniture weighing 80 to 100 pounds or more.
- Operate heavy powered equipment, including ground maintenance, digging ditches, washing buildings, operating tillers, and cutting trees with axes or chainsaws—tasks requiring prior experience and training.
- Perform general maintenance of NAF facilities using heavy equipment and heavy tools.
- Break up concrete, mix and pour concrete and asphalt, reset nails, replace hardware, and relocate playgrounds, flowerbeds, and portable structures.
- Advise the facility director of potential safety hazards and identify required repairs.
- Knowledge of processes such as mixing cement and operating heavy power equipment.
- Skill in operating, controlling, cleaning, and maintaining heavy power equipment and tools (axes, picks, tampers, chainsaws).
- Ability to perform routine operator maintenance and adjust cutting height of blades or power mowers, or operate weight‑handling devices when moving heavy loads.
- Six (6) months of laboring experience required.
- Must be able to work under general supervision, responding to oral or written instructions and completing assigned tasks.
- Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment.
- Candidates residing in Valdez, AK and surrounding areas within 300 miles of Fort Greely, AK are preferred. Military Spouse Preference and Involuntarily Separated Military Preference eligible candidates are included in the area of consideration.
- Direct Deposit and a Social Security Card are required.
- Meet all qualification, eligibility, and background requirements for this position.
- One‑year probationary period may be required.
- Completion of an employment verification (E‑Verify) check.
- Completion of pre‑employment background checks in accordance with AR 215‑3, Chapter 2, including a medical examination.
- May be required to complete a Tier 1 background investigation for a Common Access Card for physical access to federally‑controlled facilities.
- Requires frequent lifting and carrying of items weighing over 50 pounds, operating heavy powered mowers on grades, and pushing wheelbarrow loads of cement.
- Requires standing, walking, bending, and kneeling for lengthy periods.
- Works indoors and outdoors; may be exposed to adverse weather, drafts, noise, dust, and dirt.
- Potential for bruises, muscle strains, cuts, and scrapes.
- Must follow safety procedures and use standard safety equipment such as gloves, ear protectors, safety glasses, and exercise proper handling of equipment to avoid serious injury.
- Might be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays on a regular basis or as needed.
