The City of Valdez Public Works Department, Streets & Shop Division is hiring a Mechanic. This position, under general supervision, performs general and preventive maintenance and repairs of light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles, trucks and other equipment. This position also operates heavy equipment for the removal of snow a necessary.
This position is part of the City of Valdez drug testing program as set forth by the US Department of Transportation Office of Drug and Alcohol Policy and Compliance. Successful candidate will be required to proved a pre-employment UA/BA and consent to past employment drug screening verification.
Position is open until filled, review of applications is continual.
This is a fully benefited, full-time hourly position working 37.5 hours per week with probability of overtime.

Work is performed in internal and external environments with exposure to inclement weather and varying temperatures. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, materials and frequent walking, kneeling, bending, standing and lifting. Employee may be called out to work off-shift in emergency situations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A High School Diploma or GED equivalent; four (4) years' automotive and heavy equipment maintenance and operation experience; must possess and maintain a valid Alaska CDL-A driver's license or the ability to obtain.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by incumbents of this class.)
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Diagnoses, repairs and maintains light, medium and heavy-duty equipment, emergency vehicles and marine equipment, with a specific emphasis on electronic diagnosis of multiple brands of vehicles and equipment.
- Performs specific vehicle repairs and preventative maintenance as needed, including oil and filter changes, hydraulic, mechanical, electronic systems, and engine repairs as necessary.
- Uses technical manuals and computer diagnostic equipment to facilitate light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicle repairs.
- Schedules preventive maintenance for equipment and city vehicles.
- Review status of vehicles and equipment; recommend equipment replacement and major repairs.
- Maintains training skills through participation in applicable education opportunities.
- Maintains maintenance records and logs of service preformed.
- Remains available on 24-hour emergency call as needed; operates heavy equipment and vehicles for the removal of snow as necessary.
- Complies with all safety rules and regulations.
- Inventories and purchases parts, supplies and equipment replacements as necessary.
- Responsible for gathering info to aid with city bids and purchasing
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
- Computer diagnostic repair equipment and repair techniques for multiple brands of vehicles and equipment.
- Electronic communication systems.
- Gas and diesel engine operations.
- Electrical systems.
- Hydraulic systems
- Traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involved in heavy equipment operations.
- Department and City policies and procedures.
- Diagnosing and troubleshooting computer trouble codes on multiple brands of vehicles and equipment.
- Fabricating and adapting parts and tools for specific repairs.
- Reading technical manuals and specifications.
- Safe use of tools, materials and equipment used in vehicle and equipment maintenance.
- Assessing and prioritizing multiple task and projects.
- Welding techniques and applications.
HEALTH INSURANCE
- Currently monthly employee paid premium is approximately $132.00 per month for comprehensive family medical, RX, dental, vision, & hearing.
