Position: Housing Area Officer-Housing & Residence Life

Housing Area Officer — Housing & Residence Life

Provides leadership for residential communities by supervising staff, managing operations, fostering student success, and overseeing housing initiatives.

Based on the recent Proclamation:

Responsibilities Typical Allocation of Duties
  • Supervision, Leadership, and Community Development - 35% — Supervise graduate assistants and student staff, develop student leadership programs, and support community‑building initiatives.
  • Housing Operations and Budget Management - 20% — Oversee area budgets, payroll, occupancy management, maintenance requests, and financial accountability.
  • Student Engagement and Success - 15% — Provide student support, track at‑risk alerts, maintain daily student contact, and collaborate with campus partners.
  • Student Conduct and Crisis Management - 15% — Serve as a hearing officer, manage student conflicts, enforce policies, and participate in the HRL on‑call duty rotation.
  • Staff Recruitment, Training, and Development - 10% — Recruit, train, and supervise graduate and student staff while coordinating professional development programs.
  • Special Projects and Summer Programs - 5% — Manage summer camps or Heart program, assist with orientation events, and oversee special housing initiatives.

Student Staff Leadership, Supervision, and Development

Provide comprehensive leadership for graduate and undergraduate staff, including recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation. Foster a collaborative team environment while setting clear expectations, delivering ongoing training, and developing student staff as emerging leaders within a structured residential curriculum.

Residential Community Engagement, Learning, and Student Support

Cultivate a vibrant residential experience that extends student learning beyond the classroom and supports intellectual, social, and personal development. Facilitate community standards through proactive engagement, education, and when necessary, intervention and conduct processes. Respond to at‑risk alerts, provide appropriate referrals, and support students in navigating academic, social, and personal challenges.

Residential Operations, Stewardship, and Responsiveness

Manage the day‑to‑day residential experience within assigned communities, ensuring spaces are actively utilized, well‑maintained, and conducive to student success. Oversee an assigned programming budget and support accurate administrative processes. Monitor facility conditions, cleanliness, and safety compliance, ensuring timely reporting, follow‑up, and escalation of concerns to appropriate partners. Provide input on occupancy trends and community needs. Participate in the on‑call rotation and respond to student and facility‑related concerns during evenings and weekends.

Collaboration, Programs, and Institutional Engagement

Build strong partnerships across campus to support the residential experience and institutional goals, including collaboration with faculty, campus services, and families when appropriate. Serve as an active contributor to the broader student experience through required participation in all major institutional programs, including Orientation, Open Houses, and VSU Experiences. Support student leadership structures, departmental initiatives, and ongoing professional development.

Position Requirements & Work Conditions

Live‑in position requiring the Housing Area Officer to reside within an assigned residential community and maintain a visible and accessible presence for residents and staff.

  • A furnished on‑campus apartment, utilities, and meal plan are provided.
  • Participation in a professional on‑call rotation is required.
  • Evening, weekend, and holiday availability to support student needs and respond to emergencies.
  • Occasional travel and participation in training and professional development activities are expected.
