POSITION SUMMARY:

The high school English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher is responsible for developing and delivering a comprehensive ELA curriculum that engages students and fosters proficiency in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding English. The teacher will create a dynamic classroom environment that promotes literary appreciation and critical thinking skills while preparing students for advanced studies and practical application of the language.

CERTIFICATE/LICENSE REQUIREMENTS, QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, AND

WORK EXPERIENCE:

Must hold or be eligible for a valid Georgia teaching certificate in English (6-12). Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in English, English Education, or a related field. Prior teaching experience at the high school level is preferred.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop and implement an English Language Arts curriculum aligned with Georgia state standards and school district goals.
  • Plan and deliver engaging lessons that cater to various learning styles and proficiency levels.
  • Utilize diverse instructional strategies to promote student understanding and mastery of the English language.
  • Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages student participation and enthusiasm for learning English.
  • Foster a respectful and supportive atmosphere conducive to language learning and literary exploration.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments to evaluate student progress and language proficiency.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback to students to guide their learning.
  • Adjust instructional methods based on assessment data to meet individual student needs.
  • Integrate literary works and activities into the curriculum to enhance students' understanding and appreciation of literature.
  • Organize and participate in literary events, field trips, and other activities that promote literary awareness.
  • Stay updated on current best practices and developments in English language arts education by attending workshops, seminars, professional meetings, and participating in professional learning communities.
  • Engage in continuous self-evaluation and professional growth activities.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of student progress, attendance, and grades in accordance with school policies and procedures.
  • Prepare and submit required grades, data, and documentation in a timely manner.
  • Communicate effectively with parents and guardians about student progress, achievements, and areas for improvement.
  • Encourage parental involvement in students' language learning and literary activities.
  • Collaborate with other ELA teachers and staff members to enhance the English Language Arts program.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, committees, and school events.
  • Select and requisition appropriate instructional materials, textbooks, and supplies, as assigned by the principal.
  • Ensure the proper use and maintenance of classroom resources and equipment.
  • Supervise students during classroom activities, ensuring their safety and well-being.
  • Implement and enforce classroom rules and school policies.
  • Participate in school-wide initiatives and activities as required.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
  • Proficiency in the English language, including speaking, reading, writing, and listening.
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy in English language arts education.
  • Ability to develop and implement engaging and effective lesson plans.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire students to achieve language proficiency.
  • Proficiency in using technology for instruction and record-keeping.
  • Ability to maintain a positive and inclusive classroom environment.
  • SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Students, paraprofessionals, and volunteers.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Ability to work well with teachers, school administrative teams, and district office leaders.
    • Exceptional integrity, commitment to confidentiality, excellent character, and strong professional reputation.
    • Ability to abide by the Georgia Professional Standards Code of Ethics for Educators.
    • Must be regularly, predictably, and reliably at work.
    • Ability to be present at the physical worksite.
    • Must perform tasks involving prolonged periods of standing, walking, and sitting.
    • Must perform routine physical activities such as bending, lifting/pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds.
    • Vision, hearing, written, and verbal communications are essential factors in performing required tasks.
