Position Summary
  • Evaluate temperature and humidity stresses, as well as plant load in order to cycle chillers for best efficiency in operation.
  • Monitor and maintain temperature and humidity of all supply air handlers, Operating Room, and Special Procedure Areas.
  • Coordinates assigned projects to ensure completion. Performs assigned tasks, solicits assistance as needed, communicates tasks and materials needed to supervisor, and minimizes corrective clean-up.
  • Monitor and maintain the Emergency Power Supply System to ensure readiness and proper operation. Perform visual inspections and operational testing of Emergency Power Generators and Automatic Transfer Switches. Perform Start and Stop operations under static and dynamic loads.
  • Monitor and maintain Emergency Fuel Sources to ensure adequate levels are maintained, delivery system is in a continuous state of readiness, and provide monitoring to minimize the potential for release of product.
  • Perform diagnostics, repairs, and preventive maintenance of pumps, motors, air handling units, pneumatic air operating controls, digital operating controls, surgical air compressors, surgical vacuum pumps, and control air compressors.
  • Monitor and maintain the water softening system to ensure adequate levels of brine solution and successful regeneration.
  • Monitor and maintain the medical gas system and manifold operations to ensure adequate supply of nitrogen, nitrous oxide, and oxygen.
  • Monitor the operation of the steam delivery system to ensure proper operation of the steam boilers and steam converters. Perform start and stop operations, warm-up operations, diagnose flame and fuel failures, and perform alternate fuel source conversions.
  • Monitor and respond to the IFC-2020 Fire Alarm System in event of activation. Respond to fire alarm locations and assist Fire Department with checking for hazards, smoke purge operations, and reset of system after all clear notice is given.
  • Perform Physical Plant and Mechanical Room rounds each shift to perform visual inspections and ensure proper operation of Building Utility Systems. Record data for document retention, and perform maintenance as required.
  • Perform facility maintenance and diagnostics on the night and weekend shifts to include repairs of, but not limited to, lighting, electrical, HVAC, Nurse Call, Beds, Plumbing, Televisions, and Building Structure. If unable to conduct repairs, evaluate situation to determine whether additional staff of services are needed to conduct emergency repairs.
  • Attend all scheduled training to promote knowledge and operational understanding of equipment maintained by the Engineering Department, and to further assist in facilitation repairs.
  • Performs additional duties and projects as required to meet the needs of the organization.
  • Maintains hospital and departmental policies and procedures, accreditation standards, and regulator y codes. Understands and demonstrates compliance of policy and procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infectious control, accreditation standards, and regulatory codes.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Must have graduated from and vocational HVAC Program, Industrial Plant Maintenance Program, or have 5-7 years of physical plant, electrical, and/or mechanical experience. Must have successfully fulfilled the position of SGMC Plant Operator for a minimum of 5 years. Required to complete the Facility Management Computer Operation Course, with a minimum competency score of 75%. Certification in Emergency Power Supply Systems required.

Performs competencies in Boiler Operation and Emergency Generator operations.

Working Conditions - ADA Information

Considerable mental effort required to organize and manage in a high stress environment. Must be able to formulate judgments to ensure safety and prevent equipment failure and/or damage. Subject to irregular schedules and conditions including certain levels of stress and physical strain. Subject to injury such as burns, cuts, and bruises. Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, crawl, kneel, climb, and reach above shoulders at various times in each workday.

Must be able to lift 20 lbs. continuously and up to 100 lbs. occasionally. Must be able to use hands repetitively when performing simple grasping of items weighing up to 32 lbs. Must be able to push / pull up to 100 lbs. Must have functional vision, speech, and hearing. Will be exposed to extreme temperatures, 20 degrees to 120 degrees, thus appropriate clothing must be worn.

Will be exposed to infectious environments while conducting maintenance operations. Proper personal protective equipment will be provided. Will be exposed to hazardous chemicals, dirt, grease, and moisture. Will be exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards when performing repairs and operating equipment.
