Overview
Appointments from the part-time pool are temporary and often made just prior to the start of the academic term. Applicants must be available on very short notice. The Department of Oceanography and Natural Sciences (OcNS) at Cal Poly (Solano Campus) invites applications for a pool of part-time lecturers from our local geographic area. Positions are available as determined by need during the Fall and/or Spring semesters of the 2026–27 academic year.
Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications, experience, and time base.
Responsibilities may include teaching undergraduate lecture and/or laboratory courses in:
- Chemistry:
General Chemistry (I and II) and related foundational courses - Physics:
Algebra-based and calculus-based general physics sequences, including courses for engineers - Oceanography:
Introductory and upper-division courses across all subdisciplines, including physical, chemical, biological, and geological oceanography
Candidates with interdisciplinary expertise across these areas are especially encouraged to apply.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Oceanography, Chemistry, Physics, or a closely related field
Preferred Qualifications
- Doctoral degree in Oceanography, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field
- Demonstrated experience teaching undergraduate lecture and/or laboratory courses
- Expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- General Chemistry sequences
- Calculus-based Physics for engineers
- Oceanography (physical, chemical, biological, or geological)
Initial rank and salary for lecturer faculty are based on professional experience and educational background and are determined by the hiring department. Most new lecturers are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank. As of July 2024, the classification salary ranges for the respective ranks are:
- Lecturer A: $5,507-$6,677
- Lecturer B: $6,221-$13,224
- Lecturer C: $6,825-$14,523
- Lecturer D: $8,593-$15,211
