Under the direction of the Educational Services Administrator the District Librarian provides district wide leadership, coordination, and vision for comprehensive school library programs that support equitable access, digital literacy, inquiry-based learning, and student achievement. The District Librarian serves as an instructional leader and collaborative partner, ensuring that library services are integrated into curriculum, aligned with state standards, and responsive to evolving instructional technologies and student needs.
The District Librarian advances modern library practices that emphasize information literacy, media literacy, digital citizenship, culturally responsive collections, and the effective use of emerging technologies to enhance teaching and learning.
Instructional Leadership & Program Development
- Provide district wide leadership for school library programs aligned with California State Standards, AASL standards, and district instructional priorities.
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and instructional staff to integrate library resources, research skills, and media literacy into classroom instruction.
- Design and deliver professional learning for certificated and classified staff on effective library practices, inquiry-based learning, and instructional technology integration.
- Support implementation of culturally responsive, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate library collections.
- Lead district efforts in digital literacy, information literacy, media literacy, and digital citizenship.
- Support the effective use of library management systems, digital databases, e-books, online research tools, and instructional technology platforms.
- Assist teachers and students with responsible technology use in accordance with district policies, including Acceptable Use and data privacy requirements.
- Monitor and evaluate emerging technologies and digital resources for instructional value and equity of access.
- Coordinate district wide selection, acquisition, evaluation, and distribution of print and digital instructional materials and library resources.
- Support compliance with Williams Act requirements related to instructional materials and textbook sufficiency.
- Oversee cataloging standards, data accuracy, and maintenance of computerized library records.
- Develop and maintain procedures for library services to ensure consistency and quality across school sites.
- Proficiency in Integrated Library Systems (ILS)/Database Management to manage district wide inventory, cataloging and circulation.
- Train, support, and provide guidance to classified library staff and site-based personnel.
- Assist site administrators with staffing models, workflows, and best practices for library operations.
- Foster collaborative relationships and a culture of continuous improvement among library staff.
- Promote equitable access to library resources and services for all students, including English learners, students with disabilities, and historically underserved populations.
- Support student learning by teaching research skills, ethical use of information, and critical evaluation of sources.
- Analyze library usage data and program outcomes to inform decision-making and continuous improvement.
- Prepare reports, recommendations, and presentations related to library services and instructional materials.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
