Senior Engineering Technician

Location:

City of Vallejo Water Department. Two senior engineering technician positions.

• Lead and perform complex technical civil engineering work including design, drafting and design review.
• Perform skilled drafting for public works projects.
• Provide information to the public, contractors and consultants on engineering matters.
• Coordinate projects with city, state, federal officials and agencies.
• Conduct construction staking layout, research ownership data and prepare legal descriptions.
• Assist in engineering designs, drawings, specifications and estimates.
• Perform construction inspection to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
• Meet with contractors to coordinate schedules.
• Lead and perform office engineering tasks such as plan checking, applying survey information, research land title problems, act as project manager/ designer/ inspector/ administrator for capital improvement projects.
• Prepare feasibility studies, perform purchasing activities for the division.

• Receives general supervision from higher level engineering staff.
• Exercises functional and technical supervision over lower level Engineering Technician staff.

Knowledge of:

• Land surveying techniques and practices.
• Trigonometry applied to angles, areas, distances, traverses.
• Design and construction theory and engineering design standards.
• Drafting and computer-aided design.
• Construction methods and techniques.
• Engineering maps and records.
• Drafting materials, tools and equipment.
• Standards for engineering drawings.
• Construction plans and specifications.
• Office procedures, methods and computer equipment.
• Applicable laws, regulations, codes, department policies and memoranda of understanding.
• Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation.

Ability to:

• Lead, supervise, train and evaluate assigned Engineering Technicians.
• Interpret and apply state and local policies, procedures, laws, codes and regulations.
• Interpret field notes in drafting duties.
• Compile rough technical data and produce statistical and narrative reports.
• Perform civil engineering design and drafting work.
• Understand and interpret engineering plans and specifications.
• Deal firmly and tactfully with contractors, engineers and property owners.
• Prepare accurate engineering records.
• Use algebraic formulas, trigonometry tables, statistical mathematics.
• Communicate clearly and concisely orally and in writing.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Experience and Training Guidelines:

• Three (3) years of technical engineering experience in drafting, design and construction inspection.
• High School diploma or GED and at least fifteen (15) semester units of college-level courses covering engineering, drafting, construction inspection, construction management, water treatment and distribution systems, hydrology, environmental design or related topics.
