Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) Manager – Manufacturing | Onsite | Vallejo, CA

Overview

A leading, forward-thinking manufacturing firm specializing in industrialized, stick-framed multi-family housing is seeking a proactive Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) Manager. The company leverages advanced construction techniques to drive efficiency, lower costs, and promote sustainability. This role plays a vital part in fostering a safety-first culture and driving ESG initiatives across a mixed union and non-union workforce.

Position Summary

The EH&S Manager is responsible for overseeing environmental health and safety programs and leading ESG efforts to ensure full regulatory compliance, risk reduction, and workforce wellbeing. This individual will supervise one EH&S specialist, with opportunities to expand the team as operations grow.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide daily supervision, coaching, and performance development for one EH&S team member.
  • Foster a respectful, inclusive culture aligned with company values and union/non-union collaboration.
  • Set performance objectives and oversee timely execution of EH&S initiatives.
  • Promote a proactive “Safety First” mindset across manufacturing and field operations.
  • Conduct routine audits, site walkthroughs, and inspections to identify and address hazards.
  • Organize and lead safety meetings, toolbox talks, and compliance communications.
  • Ensure full adherence to OSHA, Cal/OSHA, and industry-specific safety regulations (e.g., 29 CFR 1910/1926).
  • Maintain and update critical safety documentation (IIPP, JHAs, LOTO, etc.).
  • Serve as the main point of contact during audits with regulatory bodies and union safety representatives.
  • Lead implementation of ESG strategies related to waste reduction, energy/water usage, and sustainable procurement.
  • Collect, analyze, and report ESG performance metrics for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including clients, suppliers, and union leadership.
  • Manage incident reporting, workers' compensation claims, and return-to-work programs.
  • Analyze injury trends and implement safety improvements to reduce future claims.
  • Partner with HR and supervisors to support equitable resolution and compliance.
  • Design and deliver safety training programs in English and Spanish (e.g., OSHA 30, new hire orientation).
  • Track and manage certification records, renewal schedules, and digital training platforms.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of training and adjust content based on workforce needs.

Required Qualifications

  • Education:
    Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Engineering, or related field.
  • Certifications: OSHA 30-hour required; CSP or ASP preferred.
  • Experience: 5–7 years of EH&S leadership experience in a manufacturing setting with union/non-union labor.
  • Technical Knowledge:
  • OSHA/Cal-OSHA and EPA compliance
  • Workers’ compensation and injury prevention
  • Familiarity with EH&S software (ISNetworld, Velocity

    EHS, etc.)
  • Skills:
    Strong communication, problem-solving, coaching, and conflict-resolution abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional certifications such as CIH, CHST, or LEED Green Associate.
  • Experience in ESG frameworks such as GRI or SASB.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Background in modular construction or off-site manufacturing is a plus.
  • Location:
    Onsite at a modern manufacturing facility in Vallejo, CA, with periodic field visits.
  • Physical Requirements:
    Frequent site walkthroughs, ladder/stair use, and lifting up to 35 lbs of safety gear.
  • Schedule:
    Standard day shift with flexibility for off-shift events or incidents as needed.
