Operates asphalt plant to produce materials used in construction: moves controls on panel board or control board to heat, dry, and mix ingredients, such as asphalt, sand, stone, and naphtha, to produce asphalt paving materials. Observes gauges, dials, and operation of machinery to ensure conformance to processing specifications. May repair machinery using hand tools, power tools, and welding equipment.

Operates asphalt plant for production of hot mix asphalt and other mix designs used in construction and maintenance of roadways.

This position reports directly to an Operations Supervisor who supervises non‑supervisory or supervisory employees involved in the operation of the asphalt plant and mixing of aggregate material. The Plant Operator may also share or be responsible for loading aggregate material into hopper, typical of a Heavy Equipment Operator, and in yard operations and maintenance duties typical of a Senior/Utility Worker.

Guidelines are numerous, well established, and directly applicable. Work assignment and desired results are explained by written or oral instructions. Duties assigned are generally repetitive but may involve substantial intricacy. Employee follows standardized practices; decisions or recommendations on non‑standardized situations are limited to applying policies to specific cases, and any unguidelines are taken up with the supervisor.

Under normal supervision, within a standardized situation, the employee performs duties common to the line of work without close supervision or detailed instruction. Work product is subject to continual review.

Contacts with public or employees where factual information relative to the organization or its functions is received and relayed, or a service rendered, according to established procedures or instructions.

No supervisory responsibility.

• Inputs numeric data and operational data into a computer system for asphalt plant production activities.
• Operates controls for loading trucks with material.
• Monitors material temperature and quality.
• Assists in training of plant operators.
• Participates as a crew member in daily production operations and assists in plant preventive maintenance as assigned.
• Reports mechanical failures and/or material inconsistencies to supervisor.
• Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
