Description of Position

Under the direction of the Director of Operations, the Lead Trainer/Bus Driver is responsible for training and safety compliance. Plans, coordinates, organizes and conducts classroom and behind-the-wheel bus driver training programs according to established Department of Motor Vehicle and Department of Education laws, rules and regulations; monitors driver proficiency ensuring a high standard of performance is maintained.

Representative Duties
  • Attends safety meetings and training related to state and district requirements for acquiring information.
  • Evaluates performance of bus drivers and applicants to ensure basic skills levels are met and comply with state certification requirements.
  • Maintains manual and electronic documents, files and records (e.g., licensing, certificate, and medical expiration dates; cumulative hours; bus proficiencies) to document activities and provide an up-to-date reference and audit trail, and oversees bus driver licensing, training requirements and certificate status (e.g., driver’s licenses, physicals, CPR/First Aid) ensuring compliance with state, federal, and administrative requirements.
  • Prepares and maintains written materials (e.g., activity reports, training handouts, safety information guidelines) to communicate information to bus drivers, district personnel, and state officials.
  • Processes documents and materials (e.g., citations, accident reports, incident reports) to disseminate information to the appropriate parties.
  • Performs and schedules all training and testing for new and permanent bus drivers to ensure compliance with mandated requirements and regulations; assists in planning and training for district students on safe riding habits and bus evacuation drills.
  • Maintains current knowledge in instructing and implementing safe driving practices that comply with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, codes and district policies related to student transportation.
  • Develops and maintains a positive working relationship with the California Highway Patrol.
  • Assists in planning, overseeing, and coaching skill‑enhancing recreational events.
  • Coordinates with the Lead Mechanic to ensure buses meet all safety regulations.
  • Plans and monitors the work of Delegate Behind-the-Wheel Trainer(s).
  • Drives a school bus as necessary and maintains eligibility as a school bus driver.
  • Assists with dispatching as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
  • Completion of high school or equivalent supplemented by 12 college units.
  • Demonstrated ability as a school bus driver.
  • Ability to complete the State Department of Education School Bus Driver Instructor course as a condition of employment prior to appropriate salary placement.
  • Five (5) years of bus driving experience with no chargeable accidents.
  • School Bus Driver’s Certificate currently required by the State of California.
  • Full Certificate of completion of the current School Bus Driver Trainer Program under conditions required by the State of California. A full School Bus Driver Instructor Certificate is required; if a candidate is selected without the full certificate, they will be paid bus driver pay pending successful completion of the employer‑paid School Bus Driver Trainer Program. Upon successful completion, the driver will be placed and paid in the appropriate classification and the probationary period will commence.

Knowledge of:

  • All operating and safety regulations as they apply to the operation of school buses.
  • All bus stops located in the city.
  • Bus loading and unloading practices and pupil discipline.

Ability to:

  • Train other employees effectively and maintain accurate current records thereof. Work cooperatively with others.
Licenses
  • Valid California Driver’s License.
