This reemployed annuitant position requires the agent to prevent illegal entry of aliens into the United States by land, water, or air; enforce criminal provisions of the Immigration and Nationality laws; and apprehend smugglers or aliens who are in the United States illegally.
- Detect, question, and inspect persons suspected of violating immigration and custom laws, and assess documents and assets.
- Prevent, apprehend, and investigate undocumented non‑citizens and smugglers near the borders, maintaining covert surveillance and employing infrared scopes during night operations.
- Interpret tracks, marks, and other physical evidence of illegal entry.
- Conduct farm, building, traffic, city patrols, and transportation checks.
- Patrol the international boundary and coastal waterways using a variety of government assets, including vehicles, horses, vessels, watercraft, off‑road vehicles, ATVs, snowmobiles, and motorcycles.
Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- U.S. citizen with primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years.
- Age under 59; must qualify for age‑related separation provisions.
- Registered with Selective Service (if applicable).
- Background investigation clearance and drug testing per DHS Drug‑Free Workplace Plan.
- Retired Border Patrol Agents who have retired within the last five years, met all reinstatement eligibility requirements, and hold a competitive permanent GS‑13 position at the time of application.
- Term appointment not‑to‑exceed (NTE) 1/20/2029 or your 60th birthday, whichever occurs first; minimum one‑year appointment.
- At least one year of specialized experience in law enforcement equivalent to the next lower grade level, including interpreting and enforcing immigration or comparable laws, gathering intelligence, developing case work, and investigating smuggling operations.
- Proficiency in the Spanish language (speak and read).
- Initial and continuing firearm qualification per the Gun Control Act of 1968.
- Willingness to work rotating shifts, travel overnight, and perform overtime as required.
- Valid, non‑restricted driver’s license and ability to operate government‑owned vehicles.
- Compliance with uniform, grooming, and anti‑tattoo policies.
- Conclusion of an 18‑month probationary period (if not previously completed) and completion of mandatory leadership training within 90 days of appointment.
