UTMS Special Education Teacher
Job SummaryDevelop the student's fullest acquisition of knowledge, skills, concepts, and attitudes.
Job Functions- Manages an assigned student caseload to address student goals and special education services.
- Plans and implements specially designed instruction to address core academic skills and life skills for students.
- Delivers special education services to students as outlined in the student's IEP.
- Teaches the assigned curriculum to pupils, utilizing the course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities via co‑teaching, direct instruction, small group intervention, and/or individual student intervention.
- Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and in administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
- Adapts academic material and methods to provide individual, small group, or remedial instruction to meet the needs of the individual pupil.
- Plans, organizes, and oversees the orderly, productive operation of the special education classroom.
- Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.
- Drafts and finalizes compliant Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for students on an assigned caseload.
- Conducts Annual Case Review meetings and Case Conference Committee meetings with appropriate participants in a timely, collaborative manner.
- Adheres to special education laws and regulations.
- Evaluates, monitors, and reports students' progress on goals.
- Navigates the IIEP system to maintain compliance with documentation requirements.
- Communicates and collaborates with general education teachers, parents, school counselors, and other professional staff members to meet students' needs.
- Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
- Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
- Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
- Maintains professional competence through professional development activities provided by the district and in self-selected professional growth activities.
- Serves as a positive role model for students.
- Attends professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops in order to maintain and improve professional competence.
- Adheres to all district policies and procedures.
- Supports the district's mission, vision, values and strategic plan.
- Understands and maintains boundaries and confidentiality with students, families and staff.
- Cultivates and develops inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, staff, families and community members.
- Adheres to staff and program guidelines and district procedures and policies.
- Demonstrates prompt, regular and reliable attendance.
- Other duties as assigned.
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal, Special Education and other Central Office Administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
Required
- Appropriate Indiana teaching licensure for special education and level taught.
- Knowledge of current special education teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
- Demonstrate collaboration and relationship building skills.
- Excellent technology skills.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding special education and students.
- Commitment to working effectively with culturally, economically and socially diverse students and families.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Strong communication skills verbally, orally and written.
- Ability to understand and follow data privacy rules and regulations related to students.
- Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Vision abilities required include close vision.
- Standard teacher work schedule as set forth in the Teachers' Unit Contract.
- Indiana State Special Education Teacher Certification.
- Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.
- Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
- Masters Degree preferred.
- Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
