Project Manager (Mid‑Level) Job Summary

The Project Manager - New Power Generation Construction is responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing gas transmission and distribution capital projects, including complex and high‑profile initiatives requiring specialized project management oversight. This role manages key phases of the project life cycle—planning, estimating, permitting, procurement, construction oversight, in‑service facilitation, and close‑out—while ensuring projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with all applicable codes and standards.

The Project Manager collaborates with internal stakeholders, contractors, municipalities, and regulatory agencies to ensure safe, reliable, and cost‑effective project delivery. This role applies sound project management judgment and independently manages assigned projects while escalating significant risks or issues as appropriate. The position supports Engineering, New Business, Sales & Services, and Local Operations through strong communication, coordination, and stakeholder partnership.

Essential Functions
  • Independently manages planning, estimating, permitting, scheduling, and risk analysis for assigned projects.
  • Establishes and maintains project scope, schedule, cost baselines, and change management processes.
  • Leads material procurement, engineering services coordination, pipeline interconnects, land agreements, and reimbursements.
  • Prepares projects for bidding and supports contractor selection and contract administration.
  • Monitors field construction activities to ensure safe, efficient, and high‑quality execution in accordance with company policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Provides construction support for internal and external customers.
  • Actively manages project budgets, forecasts, capital spend tracking, and invoice approvals.
  • Ensures projects are completed in a safe and reliable manner within ±5% of approved cost estimates, on schedule, and without significant regulatory notices, violations, or citations.
  • Coordinates with project controls, inspectors, engineering, land services, and operations to resolve issues and manage dependencies.
  • Builds and maintains effective relationships with contractors, municipalities, and local authorities.
  • Communicates project status, risks, mitigation strategies, and performance metrics to stakeholders.
  • Supports Engineering, New Business, and Sales & Services by developing cost estimates and project feasibility input.
  • Collaborates with peers across NiSource companies and industry partners to promote cost‑effective project execution and continuous improvement.
  • Applies local operations input into project planning and execution to support seamless turnover and long‑term operability.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, or related field or equivalent experience (minimum 9 years total experience).
  • 5+ years of experience managing construction‑related projects.
  • 3+ years of experience managing project budgets, forecasts, and cost controls.
  • Working knowledge of operations support systems (e.g., WMS or similar tools).
  • Valid in‑state driver’s license upon hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience working directly with pipeline construction contractors.
  • Working knowledge of local, state, and federal operating and construction codes.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification (PMI).
  • Experience supporting large, complex, or high‑visibility infrastructure projects.
Physical Demands

The preceding description is not intended to be a complete list of all duties and responsibilities. The role requires periodic field presence at active construction sites and interaction with contractors and operations personnel. As a public utility, NiSource is required to provide continuous service to customers at all times. To ensure we fulfill that obligation, employees may be required to work outside their normal work hours and perform tasks outside of their normal responsibilities in support of emergency operations.
