Adult Probation Officer, Presentence Investigations - Full TimeTitle: Adult Probation Officer, Presentence Investigations

Status: Full time
Purpose of Position:To provide thorough presentence investigations and sentencing recommendations for individuals awaiting sentencing.
Education and Qualification Requirements:- Knowledge of the criminal justice system including practical knowledge of the customary practices and procedures of the court
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university, preferably in a social science area
- Indiana Probation Officer certification from the Indiana Office of Court Services (or ability to complete and maintain certification requirements within six months of hire)
- Indiana Risk Assessment Systems certification from the Indiana Office of Court Services and INcite compliance (or ability to complete and maintain certification requirements within six months of hire)
- Proficiency in various computer-based skills including Microsoft Office, e-mail, internet usage
- Ability to learn Odyssey and Supervised Release Case Management Systems
- Effective motivational interviewing and interrogation skills
Effective oral and written communication skills - Ability to understand Indiana statutes
- Ability to effectively and tactfully deal with other people
- Ability to handle varied and changing priorities without direct supervision
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to supervise, handle, and work with irate, intoxicated, mentally ill or violent offenders placed on supervision
- Extra consideration will be given for the ability to fluently communicate in a language other than English
- Reside in Porter County, Indiana or be willing to relocate within six months of hire
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Conduct presentence investigations and prepare reports, including criminal and social histories, to assist the court with sentencing
- Make sentencing recommendations using evidence based principles and in accordance with applicable statutes
- Complete assessments of defendants to determine risk level for supervision and appropriateness for services
- Conduct motivation interviews to obtain criminal/social information for reports and recommendations
- Maintain accurate records, reports, and statistics regarding cases and client information
- Adhere to established court and department policies and procedures
- Attend various training as required, including annual continuing education courses - some travel may be required
- Perform any statutorily prescribed duties and requirements as written in the Indiana Code
