The Directional Drill Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient installation of underground utilities through horizontal directional drilling and related excavation activities. This role supports construction and utility projects by operating specialized drilling and heavy equipment to install telecommunications, water, gas, and other utility lines in accordance with project specifications. The operator is expected to interpret plans, monitor drilling conditions, make real‑time operational adjustments, and ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and industry standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Operate heavy construction equipment, including directional bore machines, backhoes, excavators, dozers, plows, and trenchers
, to install or maintain underground utilities. - Perform work as directed by the foreman, including utility placement and maintenance activities.
- Excavate around existing utilities with precision to prevent damage.
- Install conduit, handholes, manholes, and related infrastructure.
- Backfill and compact excavated areas in accordance with project specifications.
- Conduct daily equipment inspections and perform routine maintenance, including checking fluids, greasing equipment, and reporting mechanical issues.
- Monitor drilling parameters and job‑site conditions to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and minimal environmental impact.
- Adhere to all company policies, project requirements, and regulatory standards.
- Actively support and comply with H&M’s safety culture
, including safe operation of equipment and consistent use of required personal protective equipment (PPE). - Participate in daily and weekly safety meetings and job hazard analyses.
- Follow all OSHA regulations, including trench safety requirements.
- Maintain a safe work environment for crew members and the public.
- Strong understanding of OSHA regulations
, particularly those related to trenching and excavation. - Ability to read and interpret construction plans and utility layouts.
- Mechanical aptitude and basic troubleshooting skills for heavy equipment.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in construction, excavation, or heavy equipment operation preferred.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Valid motor vehicle operator’s license required.
