Lead Locate Technician
Job Description:
The Lead Technician is responsible for leading a group of employees within their team, maintaining and protecting their area of coverage, and following company policies and safety regulations. They accurately locate underground facilities—including telephone lines, electric power lines, cable television lines, gas lines, fiber optic lines, water lines, and sewer lines—and assist the team to accomplish these goals. This position ensures compliance with client and state requirements and provides a key component in maintaining accurate utility mapping.
- Lead the daily scheduling of contractors and subcontractors.
- Route tickets to optimize efficiency and set production targets.
- Review prior day’s documents and reports.
- Adjust daily expectations and safety messages as needed.
- Audit documents to ensure compliance with client regulations.
- Establish client quality assurance and resolve any issues.
- Verify correctness of team members’ timesheets and account for all personnel.
- Locate underground facilities using transmitter and other equipment.
- Operate in a variety of terrains and weather conditions.
- Interpret job order tickets, blueprints, and maps to plan routes.
- Perform locates and emergency/on‐call locates during regular, overtime, and holiday hours.
- Communicate professionally with customers, co‑employees, and third parties.
- Maintain a damage‑free environment and provide accurate documentation.
- Use company‑supplied technology—including company vehicle, laptop, and smartphone—and wear provided personal protective equipment.
- High school diploma or equivalency (GED).
- Multiple years of utility locating experience.
- Documentation of excellent quality ratio in the locating industry.
- Proficiency with multiple types of utility locating equipment.
- Strong problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to read, interpret, and decipher multiple types of prints.
- Experience with vacuum truck (A+ ranking).
- Physical capability to lift over 50 lbs and walk/stand for multiple hours a day.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to read and interpret prints at a high level.
- Pass a background screening with no violations within the last three years.
- Pass a DOT drug test.
