incumbent serves as an event and venue assistant – master carpenter for memorial opera house, responsible for providing specialized scenic carpentry support for productions, programming, events, and facility operations. Working under the direction of the technical director, this position constructs, installs, maintains, repairs, and strikes scenic elements according to approved designs and production plans. Incumbent may provide work direction to scenic carpenters, volunteers, and other assigned personnel while promoting safe and effective theatrical construction practices.

This position also assists with general technical, event, venue, and facility operations as assigned and as production responsibilities allow.

duties
:

constructs, installs, maintains, repairs, and strikes scenic elements according to approved designs, drawings, specifications, and direction from the technical director.

reads and interprets scenic drawings, ground plans, elevations, construction drawings, and other technical information necessary to complete assigned projects.

determines appropriate construction methods and materials within established production plans, budgets, schedules, and supervisory direction.

safely operates woodworking equipment, hand tools, portable power tools, stationary shop equipment, and other authorized technical equipment.

assists with scenic load-in, installation, technical rehearsals, production maintenance, load-out, and strike.

monitors scenic construction and installation for quality, structural integrity, and safety and communicates concerns or significant deviations from approved plans to the technical director.

provides work direction and instruction to scenic carpenters, volunteers, and less-experienced personnel during assigned construction activities.

maintains clean, organized, and safe work areas and assists with the organization and inventory of tools, hardware, scenic stock, and construction materials.

assists with general technical, production, event, venue, and facility setup, teardown, maintenance, and operational needs as assigned.

complies with established memorial opera house, valpo parks, city of valparaiso, and applicable workplace safety policies and procedures.

executes policies and procedures professionally and accurately.

attend scheduled staff meetings as assigned.

performs other related duties as assigned.

job requirements and difficulty of work
:

must be 18 years or older with a valid drivers license.

ability to work in a fast-paced environment and effectively multi-task and handle changing priorities while maintaining friendliness and professionalism.

ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.

working knowledge of theatrical carpentry, scenic construction, general construction, or a closely related field.

working knowledge of carpentry techniques, construction methods, materials, fasteners, hardware, and theatrical scenic construction practices.

ability to safely operate hand tools, portable power tools, stationary woodworking equipment, and other equipment necessary for assigned scenic construction.

ability to read and interpret scenic drawings, ground plans, elevations, construction drawings, and related technical information.

ability to recognize construction and safety concerns and determine when matters require direction or approval from the technical director.

ability to provide clear work direction and instruction to volunteers, scenic carpenters, and less-experienced personnel.

strong verbal communication, interpersonal, organizational, and time-management skills.
