Environment Generalist at Barnstormvfx

About the role Barnstormvfx is seeking a talented Environment Generalist to join our dynamic team in Vancouver, British Columbia. This full-time position is ideal for individuals who are passionate about creating immersive and visually stunning environments for film and television. As an Environment Generalist, you will play a crucial role in the production pipeline, collaborating with artists and technical teams to bring imaginative worlds to life.

Your expertise will contribute to the overall aesthetic and storytelling of our projects, ensuring that each environment is meticulously crafted and seamlessly integrated into the final product.

What you’ll do
  • Collaborate with the art and design teams to conceptualize and develop high-quality 3D environments that align with the artistic vision of each project.
  • Create detailed 3D models of environments, including landscapes, architecture, and props, utilizing industry-standard software such as Maya, Blender, or 3ds Max.
  • Texture and shade environments using tools like Substance Painter and Photoshop to achieve realistic and visually appealing surfaces.
  • Implement lighting setups that enhance the mood and atmosphere of each scene, ensuring that environments are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
  • Optimize assets for performance and memory usage, ensuring that environments run smoothly in various production contexts.
  • Participate in reviews and critiques, providing and receiving constructive feedback to refine and improve the quality of work.
  • Work closely with compositors and visual effects artists to ensure seamless integration of environments into live‑action footage or animated sequences.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and advancements in technology, continuously seeking ways to improve workflows and enhance the quality of work produced.
  • Assist in the development of environment-related workflows and best practices, contributing to the overall efficiency of the production process.
  • Mentor junior artists and provide guidance on technical and artistic challenges, fostering a collaborative and supportive team environment.
  • Participate in team meetings and brainstorming sessions to contribute ideas and solutions that enhance the creative process.
  • Maintain organized project files and documentation to ensure smooth collaboration and communication within the team.
Requirements
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in 3D environment modeling and texturing for film, television, or video games.
  • Proficiency in industry-standard software such as Maya, Blender, or 3ds Max, along with texturing tools like Substance Painter and Photoshop.
  • Strong understanding of lighting, composition, and color theory as they apply to 3D environments.
  • Experience with optimization techniques for 3D assets to ensure performance across various platforms.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to articulate artistic and technical concepts clearly.
  • A strong portfolio showcasing a range of environment work, including examples of modeling, texturing, and lighting.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment while also being self‑motivated and capable of managing individual tasks.
Nice to have
  • Familiarity with game engines such as Unreal Engine or Unity for real‑time rendering and visualization.
  • Experience with procedural generation techniques and tools, enhancing the efficiency of environment creation.
  • Knowledge of scripting languages (e.g., Python, MEL) to automate repetitive tasks and streamline workflows.
  • Previous experience in a fast‑paced production environment, demonstrating adaptability and problem‑solving skills.
