About the role

Barnstormvfx is seeking a talented Compositor to join our dynamic team in Vancouver, British Columbia. This project-based position offers an exciting opportunity to work on a variety of high-profile visual effects projects. As a Compositor, you will be responsible for integrating various visual elements into cohesive and visually stunning final shots. Your expertise will play a crucial role in enhancing the storytelling aspect of our productions, ensuring that the visual effects seamlessly blend with live-action footage.

What you'll do
  • Collaborate closely with the visual effects supervisor and other artists to understand the artistic vision and technical requirements of each project.
  • Utilize industry-standard compositing software to create high-quality composites that meet the creative and technical standards of the production.
  • Integrate various elements such as live‑action footage, CGI, and matte paintings to create seamless visual effects shots.
  • Perform color correction and grading to ensure consistency across all elements in a shot.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve any compositing issues that arise during the production process, ensuring timely delivery of shots.
  • Maintain organized file management and adhere to project naming conventions to facilitate efficient workflow.
  • Participate in reviews and provide constructive feedback to peers, fostering a collaborative and creative environment.
  • Stay updated on the latest industry trends, tools, and techniques to continually enhance your skills and contribute to the team’s growth.
  • Assist in the development of new workflows and processes to improve efficiency and quality in compositing tasks.
  • Document processes and techniques for future reference and training purposes.
  • Contribute to the overall success of the project by meeting deadlines and maintaining a high standard of work.
  • Engage in team meetings and brainstorming sessions to contribute ideas and solutions that enhance the visual storytelling of our projects.
Requirements
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in compositing within the visual effects industry, with a strong portfolio showcasing your work.
  • Proficiency in industry-standard compositing software such as Nuke, After Effects, or similar tools.
  • Strong understanding of color theory, lighting, and how to integrate various visual elements effectively.
  • Experience working with 3D software and understanding of 3D compositing techniques is a plus.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills and the ability to work under tight deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively collaborate with team members and stakeholders.
  • Ability to take direction and feedback constructively while also being proactive in suggesting improvements.
Nice to have
  • Familiarity with additional software such as Photoshop, Maya, or Houdini can be advantageous.
  • Experience in a variety of genres, including film, television, and commercials, is a plus.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies and trends in visual effects and compositing.
Skills & tools
  • Proficient in Nuke, After Effects, and other compositing software.
  • Strong artistic skills with a keen eye for detail and aesthetics.
  • Familiarity with color grading tools and techniques.
  • Understanding of visual storytelling and how compositing contributes to narrative.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast‑paced, creative environment.
