The Role
An established organization is seeking a detail-oriented and adaptable Payroll Specialist to cover a 3-month leave. Reporting to the Director of Finance, you will work closely with the Benefits and OHS Manager covering the payroll function for 400+ unionized employees and ~40 non-union.

Responsibilities

Ensure accurate and timely processing of biweekly payroll, inclusive of tasks such as meeting bi-weekly payroll processing deadlines, responding to employee inquiries, updating and verifying payroll data, maintaining internal status changes, processing terminations, and executing manual adjustments.

Processing of T4’s at the end of each year

Work closely with HR department to prepare reports required by external stakeholders (Union and benefits providers)

Liaise with pension plan providers to ensure compliance

Ensure accuracy of employee timesheets in conjunction with work schedules

Issue ROE’s and track interruptions in employee earnings

Ensure compliance with legal frameworks, best practices, and stay up to date with changes impacting payroll processes

Track eligibility for benefits and pension plans, enroll and terminate employees as required

Ad hoc duties as assigned to support functions of accounting and finance department (i.e.. payables, rent reconciliation)

Requirements

A relevant undergraduate degree or diploma in Payroll, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Strong preference will be given to candidates with experience using Payworks

Strong preference will be given to candidates with experience in unionized environment

Good understanding of Collective Agreement will be highly preferred

Good understanding of Municipal Pension Plan and group benefits

A minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in payroll administration
