** Job Summary
** The Manager, Technical Services is responsible for the management of Mechanical Engineering’s facilities, safety programs, and technical services administration. This role provides technical and administrative advice regarding the Department’s safety programs and acts as the Departmental Safety contact on all issues of safety.

This position responsible for the department safety program; the comprehensive management of labs, research facilities and technical shops; and manages all department laboratory facilities, safety and equipment issues. Responsible for identifying data management needs and serves as departmental liaison to the central IT group. This position is also responsible for the management of the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board accreditation process for the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

** Organizational Status
** This position reports to the Senior Manager, Administration. This position will regularly interact with faculty, students, visitors and staff within the Department of Mechanical Engineering. This position will also regularly liaises with the Faculty of Applied Science Dean’s Office Strategic Initiatives and Capital Planning units as well as units external to the Department such as Building Operations, Infrastructure Services, and Safety and Risk Services as required.  

This position provides day to day management of the Facilities and Administration Coordinator, and administrative oversight of technical staff.
** Work Performed
** Facilities and Laboratories
* In collaboration with the Senior Manager, Administration in managing the teaching, research and administrative space in the Department, including space inventory, planning and assignment of space. Develops and maintains SOPs for all facilities-related administrative practices.
* Identifies opportunities for space improvement or intensification and makes recommendations to the Senior Manager, Administration.
* Identifies opportunities and applies for funding to support facilities improvements.
* Responsible for the planning and execution of facilities projects valued at less than $200,000.  Working with the Senior Manager, Administration, provides detailed coordination of projects in excess of that level.
* Develops and implements policies and procedures for the acquisition, utilization, maintenance and replacement of furniture, office equipment, research support equipment and supplies. Negotiates leases and purchases of products and services.
* Engages stakeholders to develop selection criteria for updating teaching laboratory facilities and equipment in the teaching laboratories. Prioritizes projects and oversees implementation.
* Directs teaching laboratories and workshop process reviews and re-engineering to effectively implement or enhance operational procedures, workflow and internal controls within the Department.

Safety
* Responsible for the Departmental Safety Program. Assesses, develops, and oversees departmental safety plans and initiatives to ensure they are in compliance with federal, provincial, municipal, and university health and safety legislation and regulations (WorkSafeBC, Transport Canada, etc).
* Acts on behalf of the Department Head as a worker representative to the Mechanical Engineering Local Safety Team, and ensures recommendations are considered and responded to according to WorkSafeBC regulations. Acts as a resource on all accident, incident, and near miss investigations.
