Job Summary
The Faculty of Applied Science at UBC encompasses six engineering departments, the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, the School of Nursing, the School of Community and Regional Planning, four multidisciplinary programs, five major research centres, and the School of Engineering at UBC Okanagan. The Senior Manager Strategic Initiatives & Planning is responsible for leading the development, planning, and implementation of strategic initiatives and projects for the Faculty of Applied Science; working closely with senior staff and faculty in the operational planning and execution of special projects across the Faculty. In collaboration with the Executive Director, Strategy and Planning this role will champion projects and initiatives to advance the Applied Science mission and vision.

This role will provide strategic decision support to Faculty leadership and invest in building productive relationships at all levels necessary to, influence, and drive strategic opportunities within the Faculty and the University. The Senior Manager Strategic Initiatives & Planning will be responsible for regular reporting and communication of projects related to the APSC strategic and implementation plan.

In collaboration with the Director, Capital Projects, this role will be responsible for advising and making recommendations on projects related to space and facilities for the academic and administrative units within the Faculty and will oversee complex space management activities for the Dean’s Office. The Senior Manager Special Projects & Planning directs Faculty wide safety leadership, accountability and planning.

Organizational Status
Reports directly to the Executive Director, Strategy and Planning and works closely with the Director, Capital Projects. This role will provide advice, guidance, and project management support to the academic and administrative units across the Faculty to ensure integration, communication, and execution of the Faculty’s strategic priorities. Works closely with the Dean, Associate Deans, Department Heads, School Directors and Administrative managers as required.

This position will also be responsible for liaising with staff in Human Resources, Financial Services, Building Operations, Infrastructure Development, Safety and Risk Services, and Campus &Community Planning.

Work Performed
Project Management &Strategic Initiatives:

  • Works with Faculty Leadership to initiate and manage the development and implementation of short and long-term operational and strategic plans. Including designing and managing multiple concurrent initiatives and project of considerable size, diversity, complexity, and risk, all of which are vital to advancing the priorities of the Faculty’s strategic goals and objectives

  • Leads critical strategic priorities for the Faculty including but not limited to, administrative, financial and operational projects; develops plans and identifies strategic issues that require the intervention of leadership

  • Researches and recommends innovative solution development, analyzing data and preparing business plans to explore new potential strategic areas/projects for the Faculty

  • Provides strategy and decision support including advising on project plans, defining project requirements, developing project scope, budgets and schedules, identifying staffing requirements, forming project teams, and leading cross-functional work and project management processes between portfolios
