Development Assistant (Laboratory Assistant)
We are looking for a regular full‑time Development Assistant to join our dynamic Innovation & Portfolio Management, netCAD team in Vancouver. The netCAD facility operates as a miniature blood centre, providing an environment to develop and enhance blood products and deepen understanding of product qualities for transfusion. In this role you will plan and operate the netCAD blood collections site, performing tasks in accordance with operational procedures or approved study protocols.
Salary:
Grade 7 $ 75,100 – $88,300;
Grade 6 $ 65,100 – $76,600;
Grade 5 $ 56,900 – $66,500.
Responsibilities
Production
Operate manual and semi‑automated devices such as centrifuges, extractors, presses, sterile dockers, sealers, pathogen‑inactivation illuminator, and cell processors/washers to produce and transform blood components.
Process blood components, including receiving units, packing and loading into centrifuges, extraction, filtration, buffy coat pooling, and pathogen inactivation if required.
Testing
Utilize manual and automated instruments such as hematology analyzer, blood gas analyzer, pH meter, microscope, BacT incubator, flow cytometer, and cell deformability analyzer to perform testing on blood components.
Prepare testing samples using techniques such as mixing, sample transfer, centrifugation, pipetting, aliquoting, weighing, fixing, diluting and reagent preparation.
Other Duties
Ensure all supplies and reagents are on‑hand and in‑date to meet production and testing plans.
Maintain equipment and carry out regular preventative maintenance.
Identify, follow up, and resolve instrument alarms and flags.
Participate in provision of blood products to researchers, including receiving and uploading orders, and ensuring fulfilment.
Prepare shipment of specimen tubes to Donor Testing lab or blood products to researchers and other departments.
Engage in development projects focused on new blood components and manufacturing processes, and deepen understanding of current products.
Enter, upload, and verify data, ensuring records are correct and complete.
Review study protocols and take part in walkthroughs.
Perform administrative tasks, including ordering supplies and booking shipments.
Support installation and validation of new equipment and instruments.
Contribute to preparation of netCAD‑specific operating procedures and work instructions.
Co‑achieve coaching and training of new team members.
Contribute to operational decision‑making.
Collaborate with netCAD team members to align workflows, clarify hand‑offs, integrate functions, and resolve scheduling or capacity issues.
Perform other related duties as required.
Desired Education and Skills
Minimum of an undergraduate degree in biological or medical laboratory sciences from a recognized institution; preferably a master’s degree, with at least 5 years of blood industry development experience (Grade 7).
Undergraduate degree in biological or medical laboratory sciences with at least 3 years of blood or related industry development experience (Grade 6).
Post‑secondary education, preferably an undergraduate degree in biological or medical laboratory sciences (Grade 5).
Knowledge and experience in blood and blood component collection, manufacturing processes, and testing.
Experience working in a blood‑industry product and process environment and R&D laboratory environment.
Experience performing device validation.
Experience in assay development is an asset.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a matrix team environment that promotes high performance.
Ability to work safely and efficiently in a laboratory environment with biological and chemical hazards.
Ability to build relationships based on listening, openness, flexibility, respect and empathy.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
Excellent planning, organization and attention‑to‑detail skills.
Ability to read, understand, and follow complex written instructions, protocols and test procedures without support, ensuring tasks are executed exactly as specified.
Highly proficient in Microsoft Office tools, including PowerPoint, Word, Excel and Access.
