Ecologist - Intermediate

Job Description

We are seeking an Intermediate Ecologist to join our Western Canada team of environmental professionals. The role focuses on collection, analysis, and interpretation of biological survey data from project sites, and involves preparing various environmental reports and supporting permitting activities.

• Provide technical expertise in wildlife, botany, ecological land classification, wetland function and delineation, and fish habitat.
• Lead, coordinate, and conduct field surveys, including targeted efforts for Species at Risk, habitat assessments, and compensation or permitting requirements.
• Conduct wetland evaluations and boundary delineations.
• Support development of proposals, scopes, field workplans, reporting, and provincial/federal permitting (e.g., Water Sustainability Act, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Species At Risk Act).
• Complete detailed literature reviews of official plans, legislation, consultant reports, GIS sources, scientific literature, and biological databases.
• Compile, interpret, and analyze data.
• Coordinate, write, and provide technical input for Environmental Impact Assessments, Biophysical Assessments, Restoration Plans, Construction Environmental Management Plans, and other natural resource deliverables.
• Mentor intermediate and junior staff and foster a collaborative environment.

• Bachelor’s degree in science or environmental studies, or equivalent.
• Minimum 5–7 years of related work experience.
• Prior work at an environmental consulting firm, provincial regulator, or NGO as a biologist or ecologist.
• British Columbia or Alberta certifications/training (e.g., Ecological Land Classification, Riparian Health Assessment).
• Certification as an Authenticating Wetland Professional and/or Qualified Aquatic Environmental Specialist (Alberta) is an asset.
• Experience in land development, aggregates, mining, or linear infrastructure in Western Canada.
• Field experience conducting botanical and wildlife surveys with monitoring protocols and Species at Risk surveys.
• Proven project and client management skills.
• Digital data entry in the field and remote data loggers is an asset.
• Willingness to travel and work long hours in remote or inclement conditions.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks while maintaining detail orientation.
• Flexibility across project types.
• Experience working with Indigenous communities is an asset.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and strong written/verbal communication.
• Valid driver’s licence with a clean abstract.
• First aid certification or ability to obtain one.

Our workplace operates on a hybrid model, with office presence three days a week to support collaboration and flexibility.

The salary range for this position is $74,250 to $123,750, aligned with major city centres in GHD locations.
