** The University of British Columbia Vancouver campus has more than 500 vehicles and equipment’s. Our diverse fleet includes but is not limited to Electric vehicles, pickup trucks, Cargo / Passenger vans, refuse-hauling trucks, construction equipment, backhoes, rugged terrain vehicles, lawnmowers, and Agriculture and landscape equipment.
** Job Summary
** UBC Facilities creates outstanding university experiences by maintaining and operating the university's learning environment in the safest, simplest, sustainable, and most efficient way.
Mechanics belong to the Facilities’ Fleet Management Department, which offers a complete range of services for all automotive and equipment assets at the University. Within this department, the Mechanic performs skilled mechanical repair and maintenance work of campus vehicles and equipment and other mechanical equipment. The Mechanic inspects and maintains vehicles and equipment according to provincial vehicle inspection program requirements.
** Organizational Status
** The Mechanic belongs to the Fleet Management Department and reports to the Manager, Fleet & Asset. Works closely with other Mechanics in the unit as well as employees in other trade and administrative groups.
** Work Performed
** As part of the repair and maintenance of vehicles, overhauls engines, and transmissions; strong understanding of electrical and electronic systems; performs electrical and electronic diagnosis; conducts fault finding, rebuilds parts for reuse; modifies engine parts for specific purposes; and welds (using electrical and acetylene welding) and repairs equipment. Lubricates trucks, tractors, and equipment.
Maintains all vehicles and equipment up to recognized standards.
Responsible for vehicle inspection.
Experience in maintaining and servicing EV, Hybrid, and CNG vehicles
Keeps current with preventive maintenance concepts using Planon and other related systems, and be familiar with manufacturer and regulatory maintenance requirements.
Inspects and maintains vehicles to meet Provincial Vehicle Inspection Program requirements.
Maintains gardening equipment, such as power lawnmowers, fertilizers, spreaders, chainsaws, etc.
Maintains and tests stationary emergency generators.
Fabricating, upfitting, and modifying vehicles utilizing sheet metal facilities.
Train, and monitor the work of one or more apprentices.
Instructs drivers and operators in proper vehicle and equipment use and maintenance.
Maintains mechanical tools and equipment used for mechanical repairs.
Maintains an inventory of repair parts, order parts, and repair/maintenance estimates.
Responds to Trouble Calls and Emergency Call-Outs, some of which may involve mobile repairs.
Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.
** Consequence of Error/Judgement
** Identifies the nature of problems, determines repair/maintenance requirements, the sequence of work, the work methods and equipment to be employed and decides how best to complete the work based on the technical knowledge of the trade and related departmental guidelines and policies; inappropriate decisions may result in minor service delays and/or costs.

** Works under general supervision and from oral and written instructions and by established mechanical techniques.
** Supervision Given
** Monitors and checks the work of apprentice(s) as the need arises.
** Minimum Qualifications
** A trade certification to a journeyperson level as a Truck and Transport Mechanic (Preferred) or Heavy-Duty Mechanic, computerized engine management training and technical certification as an authorized Commercial/Private Vehicle Inspector, Valid BC Drivers class 3 license with air brakes endorsement.
