Skilled Laborer – Civil Construction (Pipe Layer Assistant)

Job Description

This role supports pipe layers on civil construction projects, focusing on the installation, repair, and maintenance of underground piping systems for water, sewer, and drainage infrastructure. You work hands-on in the field, contributing to trench preparation, pipe installation, and site cleanup while maintaining high safety and quality standards. The position requires strong physical stamina, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team on active construction sites.

Responsibilities

  • Install underground piping systems, including storm, sanitary, and water mains, in accordance with project specifications and grade requirements.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, site plans, and grade stakes to understand layout, elevations, and installation details.
  • Align and position pipes to the required depth and grade using lasers, transit levels, and other layout tools.
  • Perform trench preparation activities, including measuring, grading, and compacting to ensure proper support and alignment of pipes.
  • Connect pipe components made of PVC, concrete, HDPE, ductile iron, and other materials using appropriate joining methods.
  • Assist with excavation operations, including digging, shoring, and preparing trenches for pipe installation.
  • Support backfilling and compaction processes to ensure stable and durable underground installations.
  • Ensure proper bedding, anchoring, and sealing of pipe systems to meet quality and performance standards.
  • Inspect pipes and fittings for defects or damage and report issues to supervisors to maintain compliance with quality requirements.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in safe, clean, and serviceable condition.
  • Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and site regulations, including the proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Work collaboratively with equipment operators, other laborers, and foremen to complete tasks efficiently and safely.
  • Adapt to changing site conditions and project requirements while maintaining productivity and attention to detail.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum of 2 years of civil construction labor experience.
  • Hands-on experience installing utilities in a construction environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, site plans, and grade stakes.
  • Proficiency in assisting with the installation of underground piping systems for storm, sanitary, and water mains.
  • Skill in aligning and positioning pipes using lasers or transit levels to achieve correct depth and grade.
  • Experience performing trench preparation, including measuring, grading, and compacting.
  • Capability to connect pipe components made of PVC, concrete, HDPE, and ductile iron using appropriate methods.
  • Comfort working in outdoor construction environments in various weather conditions.
  • Physical ability to frequently lift heavy materials, typically up to 50 lbs or more.
  • Strong attention to safety and adherence to company policies and site regulations.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment with equipment operators, laborers, and foremen.
  • Valid driver’s license.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with underground utilities, including water, sewer, and drainage systems.
  • General civil construction knowledge and familiarity with construction site practices.
  • Interest in ongoing training such as fall protection, confined space safety, and WHMIS.
