Position: Trades II - Mechanic (Cemetery)
Main Purpose and Function
The Trades II Mechanic performs skilled mechanical inspection, maintenance, repair, and installation of a wide range of vehicles, small equipment, tools and mechanical systems. The position ensures that cemetery assets are safe, reliable, and operating efficiently to support continuous service delivery. This role works with a high degree of independence, applying certified trade knowledge, diagnosing complex mechanical issues, and contributing to preventative maintenance programs.
Specific Duties/Responsibilities
Work collaboratively with both the Cemetery and Fleet & Manufacturing Services teams to provide mechanical support across divisions, responding to operational needs as required.
Inspect, maintain, diagnose, service, and repair a wide range of small tools and light equipment, ensuring safe and reliable operation.Perform maintenance and repairs on equipment including, but not limited to:Hand-held power toolsSmall engine equipment such as trimmers, chainsaws, and blowers, compactors, generators, and other portable equipmentUtility vehicles – gas and electricLight equipment up to and including skid steersDiagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and engine-related issues involving gasoline, diesel, hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical systems.Conduct preventative maintenance in accordance with manufacturer recommendations, safety standards, and established maintenance schedules.Troubleshoot equipment failures, identify root causes, and determine appropriate repair methods, parts, and materials.Test equipment following repairs or servicing to confirm proper operation and compliance with safety requirements.Identify, tag, and report unsafe, defective, or unserviceable tools and equipment, recommending repair, replacement, or removal from service as necessary.Maintain accurate and timely maintenance records, inspection reports, and service documentation using established systems and procedures.Ensure all work is completed in compliance with applicable safety regulations, organizational policies, and best practices.Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment, including proper use and care of tools, equipment, and shop facilities.Communicate effectively with supervisors, operators, and other trades staff regarding equipment condition, repair status, and maintenance needs.Provide input on equipment condition, lifecycle concerns, and maintenance planning to support operational efficiency and asset management.Other duties/responsibilities as assignedMinimum Qualification Requirements
Education and Experience:
Automotive Service Technician or Heavy Duty Mechanic Certificate of Qualifications (T.Q.) ,or Certification of Apprenticeship, or Inter-Provincial Red Seal Endorsement.Red Seal certification is preferred.Completion of Grade 10, supplemented by technical courses related to the work.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the automotive, light equipment and mechanical trade.Thorough knowledge of braking systems.Considerable knowledge of the hazards and proper safety precautions of the trade.Ability to perform a variety of complex skilled electrical and mechanical tasks in the overhaul, repair, maintenance and adjustment of equipment, automotive and marine electrical systems.Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions which may be accompanied by sketches and diagrams.Ability to interpret manufacturers' instructions and diagrams pertaining to equipment.Ability to requisition parts and materials.Ability to operate vehicles and heavy-duty equipment.Ability to plan, assign and supervise one or more subordinates.Ability to inspect and test City vehicles for road worthiness, following prescribed provincial standards.Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment employed in the trade.Agility, muscular coordination, and sufficient strength to permit the performance of heavy manual labour.Superior mechanical aptitude.Driver's License and Record Checks:A current and valid Class 5 BC Driver's License or higher and a Satisfactory National Safety Code driving recordBusiness Unit/Department
