Roles and Responsibilities- Assist surgeons during operative procedures, providing aid in exposure, hemostasis, and other intra‑operative technical functions that help surgeons carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient.
- Conduct pre‑operative patient assessments and provide postoperative care and monitoring.
- Take patient medical histories and perform physical examinations.
- Coordinate patient care with other healthcare professionals.
- Administer medications and injections as prescribed.
- Maintain accurate and detailed medical records, documenting all patient interactions, treatments, and procedures according to hospital policy, legal requirements, and Howard University Hospital medical staff bylaws.
- Work closely with other medical and surgical specialties to coordinate and optimize patient care.
- Educate patients and families on surgical procedures and postoperative care.
- Participate in surgical rounds, staff meetings and in quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing patient outcomes.
- Assume other duties and responsibilities that are related and appropriate to the position and area. The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and are not to be considered all‑inclusive.
- Previous experience in general surgery required.
- Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
- Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
- Licensed to practice as a PA in Washington, DC.
- Bilingual or multilingual a plus.
- BLS Certification required.
- ACLS Certification required.
