Overview
STEM ACADEMY TEACHER ASSISTANT (5,000 STIPEND) – STEM Academy at Booker T. Washington, Suffolk Public Schools. This position supports classroom teachers by working with individual students or small groups and assists with daily instructional activities.
Location: Booker T. Washington Elementary School
Salary: $26,188 to $33,596 (based on 12-month position scale)

Essential Functions / Responsibilities- Assisting the classroom teacher with instructional activities; reinforce material already presented through individual or small-group support; help facilitate daily instruction and activities
- Assist classroom teacher(s) in performing duties as assigned or undertaking specialized tasks
- Work with individuals or small groups to reinforce material introduced by the teacher
- Prepare materials for learning and other instructional activities
- Assist with large group activities
- Guide independent study and other work assigned by the teacher
- Report student problems to the teacher and assist with student behavior and classroom management
- Perform cafeteria, hall, recess, and/or bus duties; assist with lunch, snack, cleanup, lavatory, clothing and washup routines
- Provide classroom coverage and instructional support for teacher absences
- Participate in inservice training programs as assigned
- Performs related tasks as required
- Performs other related tasks as assigned by the SABTW Lab School Specialist and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent

Skills and Abilities
- General knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in classroom teaching
- Ability to maintain confidential files and information
- Ability to deal effectively with students and teachers
- Skill in the use of classroom and instructional equipment
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, parents, students and the general public
- Successful completion of 48 hours of college credits or passing the Para Professional Test and prior experience working with children
Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copier and telephone.
Special RequirementsTravels to professional meetings as required.
