Student Life Counselor – Graveyard

Full-Time/Permanent

Vancouver, WA

Note - This position is expected to start in August 2026. This is a school year‑based position and is not scheduled to work during annual school closures.

CDHY offers services including academic, residential, outreach, and professional development. Washington School for the Deaf is the campus school for the Center and offers programming for preschool through age 21 in Vancouver, WA.

About the Position

CDHY seeks a graveyard shift Student Life Counselor (SLC) responsible for student supervision, engagement, and education related to independence, safety, and self‑advocacy. The SLC monitors and engages students during the Residential and After School Programs.

Position Schedule

Full‑time, school‑year‑based.

Work hours:

12:00 am–8:00 am Monday–Friday. Not scheduled during school closures or breaks.

Students receiving shift premium pay: $2.50 per hour for hours after 6:00 pm and before 6:00 am. Full shift premium pays all hours worked. The position also receives a 5 % assignment pay in addition to base salary and shift premium.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise and care for students—monitor at all times and in all residential areas, cafeteria, athletic events, off‑campus activities, and outdoors.
  • Nurture and comfort students to ensure safety and well‑being; teach emergency procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and employee records.
  • Develop and implement programming to meet students’ physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development needs.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with supervisors, parents, coworkers, academic staff, community, and organizations.
  • Assess and document student behavior, attendance, and independent living skill data per program procedures.
  • Transport and supervise students to off‑campus events and appointments as required.
  • Pick up students at school, buses on travel days, and coordinate after‑school program activities.
  • Read all email, reports, and communication logs daily.
  • Assist students with homework and daily schedule to promote self‑sufficiency.
  • Coordinate and assist with ILS curriculum implementation under supervisors’ direction.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One school year experience working in an instructional group setting with students.
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language.
  • Experience developing innovative ideas.
  • Experience coordinating and leading small groups, creating a collaborative environment to resolve problems or implement plans.
  • Effective communication skills for teaching and applying principles, techniques, or information.
  • Ability to pass state and federal background checks with no criminal record.
  • Willingness and ability to serve as a mandated reporter of childhood abuse and neglect.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years of college (90 quarter credits) majoring in interpreter training, education, child development, social sciences, recreation, or related subjects.
  • Two or more years experience working in an educational or residential setting with school‑aged students (K–12th grade).

Salary

Salary is set using the State of Washington General Government pay scales (Range 40).
