Position: Special Education Para educator – Transition Program at Archway Academy

Department: Special Services

Hours / Work Times: 7 Hours Per Day (9:05 a.m.

- 4:35 p.m., includes 30 minute unpaid lunch); 181 days per year (171 student days / 10 holidays)

Position Status: Student Support (Permanent)

Classification Group: Para educator Class II

Essential Responsibilities
  • Assist the Transition Program Instructor in supervising and working with secondary students.
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, and community members.
  • Provide one-to-one and group instruction to meet each student’s IEP.
  • Help establish and maintain a learning environment aligned with course goals and curriculum outcomes.
  • Support students in acquiring skills needed for successful job placement.
  • Provide orientation and support in public transportation use when necessary.
  • Maintain student data files, attendance records, wage reports, work evaluations, and a log of activities and employer contacts.
  • Implement behavior management strategies as outlined by the instructor.
  • Organize and prepare instructional materials.
  • Handle bodily fluids and lift or position students as required.
  • Attend training sessions to maintain up-to-date knowledge of Special Education students.
  • Travel between locations to fulfill duties.
  • Assess initial skill levels and readiness for training.
  • Supervise and teach job tasks onsite, adjusting to changing responsibilities.
  • Ensure accommodations, assistive technology or equipment are in place and understood.
Other Responsibilities
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Be at least 18 years old and hold a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Meet one of the following:
    • Apassing score of 455 or higher on the ETS Para Pro Assessment (or equivalent).
    • Hold an Associate Degree or higher from an accredited college/university.
    • Earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at 100 level or higher.
    • Completed a Para educator Apprenticeship Program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council.
  • Basic typing and keyboarding skills.
  • Previous experience working with students in academic or professional special education settings.
  • Effective communication skills with students, staff, parents, and community members.
  • Ability to work with and supervise students on and off campus.
  • Willingness to learn computer skills and operate office equipment.
  • Ability to perform under constant interruptions.
  • Ability to travel between locations as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Build positive relationships as part of a team.
Physical and Mental Demands

Physical:
Vision, hearing, speaking, standing, walking, reaching, stooping, bending, lifting (up to 50 lbs. individually), and sitting. Proportions of demands range from occasionally to frequently.

Mental:
Reading documents, verbal and written communication, multiple concurrent tasks, constant interruptions, confidentiality. Proportions similarly range from occasionally to continuously.

Equipment and Tools

Computer, typewriter, copy machines, telephone, assistive technology, and other tools required to perform duties.
