Position: Special Education Para educator Transition Program (9912 Sped)

Starting Date: Aug 24, 2026

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Transition Program Instructor and the Special Services Program Coordinator, the Special Education Para educator will assist in supervising instructional activities and work closely with students individually and in small groups in schools and community settings. The assistant must be able to work a flexible and variable daily schedule to support students in their community and work placements.

6 Hours Per Day (9:35 a.m. – 4:05 p.m. includes 30 minute unpaid lunch)

181 days per year (171 student days / 10 holidays)

Essential Functions
  • Assist the Transition Program Instructor in supervising secondary students.
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, and members of the business community.
  • Provide one-to-one and group instruction to meet each student’s IEP.
  • Establish and maintain a learning environment as specified by course goals and curriculum outcomes.
  • Assist students in acquiring skills needed for job success.
  • Provide orientation and support for use of public transportation.
  • Maintain student data files, attendance records, wage reports, work evaluations, logs of activities and employer contacts.
  • Implement behavioral management strategies outlined by the teacher.
  • Organize and prepare instructional materials.
  • Handle body fluids as necessary.
  • Lift and position students as necessary.
  • Attend training sessions to maintain up-to-date knowledge of Special Education students.
  • Travel from location to location to accomplish tasks.
  • Assess initial skill levels and readiness for training of students.
  • Supervise and teach student/employee job tasks onsite and adjust as responsibilities change.
  • Ensure that necessary accommodations, assistive technology, or equipment items are in place and understood.
Other Responsibilities
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Be at least 18 years old and hold a high‑school diploma or equivalent.
  • Meet at least one of the following:
    • Pass score of 455 or higher on the Education Testing Service Para Pro Assessment (ETS test/PRAXIS).
    • Possess an Associate Degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
    • Earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at 100 level or higher at an accredited college or university.
    • Completed a Para educator Apprenticeship Program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council.
  • Basic typing/keyboarding skills.
  • Previous experience working with students in academic areas or professional coursework in Special Education.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, and business community members.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise students both on campus and off campus.
  • Willingness to learn computer skills.
  • Ability to operate office equipment such as computer, typewriter, copy machines, telephone.
  • Ability to perform under constant interruption.
  • Travel ability from location to location as required.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive team relationships.
