Reports To: Special Education Instructor / Building Principal

Position Type: Part‑time (3.17 hrs/day, 141 days/year)

Position Status: Program Support

Position Duration: Permanent

Summary Statement

Under the supervision of the Special Education classroom instructor and the building principal, the Special Education Para educator will assist in the supervision of instructional activities, working closely with students individually and in small groups.

Essential Functions
  • Under direction of the Special Education teacher or IEP manager, provide special education services and supports to elementary and/or secondary students eligible for special education.
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents.
  • Provide one‑to‑one and group instruction to students as directed by the teacher to meet the individualized education program (IEP).
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining learning environments specified by course goals and curriculum outcomes.
  • Assess student progress, evaluate learning, and collect performance data to ensure progress toward each student’s IEP goals.
  • Maintain accurate data on student progress.
  • Assist in administering and scoring formal and informal tests.
  • Implement behavioral management strategies using techniques outlined by the teacher.
  • Assist in organizing and preparing instructional materials.
  • Address students’ bathroom needs, including lifting and changing students when required.
  • Feed students as necessary.
  • Handle bodily fluids as needed.
  • Lift and/or position students as necessary.
  • Provide services directed by related service providers (OT, PT, SLP).
  • Assist students with assistive technology and physical assist devices (wheelchairs, walkers, stands, lifts).
  • Attend training sessions to maintain understanding of students’ special education needs.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Basic typing/keyboarding.
  • Previous experience with students in academic areas and/or coursework in Special Education.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and supervise students.
  • Personal flexibility, initiative, and cooperativeness.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Willingness to learn computer skills and assistive technology.
  • Willingness to learn to operate office equipment.
  • Ability to perform under constant interruptions.
  • Physical strength to manage potentially aggressive behavior of students.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with team members.
