TRANSITION PROGRAM
LOCATION: Archway Academy
REPORTS TO: Transition Program Instructor / Special Services Coordinator
DEPARTMENT: Special Services
Hours / Work Times: 6 Hours Per Day (9:35 a.m. – 4:05 p.m., includes 30 minutes unpaid lunch)
Days per Year: 181 (171 student days / 10 holidays)
Para educator Employment Requirements- Be at least eighteen (18) years of age and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent.
- Must meet one or more of the following:
- Have received a passing score of 455 or higher on the Education Testing Service Para Pro Assessment (ETS test/PRAXIS).
- Hold an Associate Degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
- Have earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at 100 level or higher at an accredited college or university.
- Have completed a Para educator Apprenticeship Program (program must be registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council).

Upon hire, new para educators will be required to complete state‑required training offered through Evergreen School District.

Position Duration: Permanent
Salary Placement: New employees will start at the minimum hourly rate in the classification salary range. Employees who have verified prior years of service of similar occupational experience may receive experience credit towards salary step placement.

SUMMARY STATEMENTUnder the supervision of the Transition Program Instructor and the Special Services Program Coordinator, the Special Education Para educator will assist in the supervision of instructional activities, working closely with students on an individual and small group basis in the schools and community. The assistant must be able to work a flexible and variable daily schedule to support students in their various community and work placements.
ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS
- Assist the Transition Program instructor in supervising and working with secondary students, including:
- Communicating effectively with students, staff, parents, and members of the business community.
- Providing one‑to‑one and group instruction to meet students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEP).
- Establishing and maintaining a learning environment as specified by course goals and curriculum outcomes.
- Assisting students in developing job‑related skills.
- Providing orientation and support for the use of public transportation, when necessary.
- Maintaining student data files, attendance records, wage reports, and work evaluations, and logging activities and employer contacts.
- Implementing behavioral management strategies in line with teacher guidance.
- Organizing and preparing instructional materials.
- Handling body fluids as necessary.
- Lifting and positioning students as necessary.
- Attending training sessions to maintain current knowledge of special education students.
- Traveling between locations to accomplish tasks.
- Assessing initial skill levels and readiness for training of students.
- Supervising and teaching assigned job tasks onsite, adjusting as responsibilities change.
- Ensuring that all necessary accommodations, assistive technology, or equipment items are available and understood.
