SPECIAL EDUCATION PARA EDUCATOR

Location: Pacific Middle School

Reports To: Special Education Instructor / Building Principal

Department: Special Services

Hours: 6 Hours/Day (9:35 a.m. – 4:05 p.m. including 30‑minute unpaid lunch) & 3.83 Hours on Early‑Release Days (9:35 a.m. – 1:55 p.m.)

Position Status: Student Support;
Duration: Permanent

Relationship to Salary: Employees will start at the minimum hourly rate for the classification; experience may be credited.

Summary Statement

Under the supervision of the Special Education classroom instructor and building principal, the Special Education Para educator will assist in supervising instructional activities and work with students individually and in small groups.

Essential Functions
  • Provide special education services and supports to students eligible for special education.
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents.
  • Deliver one‑to‑one and group instruction based on the student’s IEP.
  • Maintain and prepare a learning environment that matches course goals and curriculum outcomes.
  • Assess and record student progress to ensure IEP goal attainment.
  • Assist in administering and scoring formal and informal tests.
  • Implement behavioral management strategies as directed by the teacher.
  • Organize and prepare instructional materials.
  • Support students’ bathroom, feeding, and hygiene needs, including lifting and changing students as required.
  • Assist with use of assistive technology and physical assist devices.
  • Collaborate with related services providers (OT, PT, SLP) as directed.
  • Attend required training sessions to maintain knowledge of student needs.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the teacher or principal.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum 18 years old; high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Meet one of the following:
  • Pass 455+ on ETS Para Pro test.
  • Associate degree or higher from an accredited institution.
  • 72 quarter credits (48 semester credits) at 100 level or higher.
  • Completed a Para educator Apprenticeship Program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council.
  • Basic typing/keyboarding proficiency.
  • Experience working with students in academic or professional special education settings.
  • Strong communication skills with students, staff, parents.
  • Ability to work with and supervise students.
  • Flexibility, initiative, and cooperativeness.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Willingness to learn computer skills and assistive technology.
  • Ability to handle physical demands and potential aggressive student behavior.
  • Team collaboration skills.
