Position: Special Education Para educator DD/BHVR (9949 Sped)

Special Education Para educator DD/BHVR (9949 Sped)

Location: Hollingsworth Academy, Vancouver, Washington

Starting Date: Aug 24, 2026

Schedule

7 hours per day (7:30 a.m.

- 3:00 p.m. includes 30‑minute unpaid lunch) on regular days and designated full Wednesdays.

4.5 hours per day (7:40 a.m. – 12:10 p.m.) on Wednesdays and Middle School early‑release days.

190 school days per year (180 student days / 10 holidays).

Position Status

Program Support – Permanent.

Classification Group:
Paraeducators Class III.

Compensation & Benefits

Hourly rate: $27.54 to $34.67 per hour, based on experience credit.

Benefits available for employees who work at least 630 hours in a school year: medical, dental, vision, basic long‑term disability, basic life and AD&D insurance through SEBB; FSA, DCAP, HSA, PPFSA (with HDHP); retirement through DRS; paid holidays and paid time off (sick, vacation, personal, religious, bereavement).

Para educator Employment Requirements
  • At least 18 years of age and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Meet one or more of the following:
    • Passing score of 455 or higher on the ETS Para Pro Assessment.
    • Associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
    • 72 quarter credits (48 semester credits) at 100 level or higher from an accredited college or university.
    • Completed a Para educator Apprenticeship Program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council.
Core Responsibilities
  • Assist the Special Education classroom teacher in supervising and working with elementary and/ or secondary students.
  • Monitor students at all times.
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents.
  • De‑escalate students in crisis.
  • Provide one‑to‑one and group instruction to meet the individualized education program (IEP).
  • Assist in evaluating and specifying direction of instruction to maximize each student’s potential.
  • Maintain accurate data related to school behavior and academics.
  • Assist in administering and scoring formal and informal tests.
  • Implement behavioral management strategies outlined by the teacher.
  • Organize and prepare instructional materials.
  • Maintain classroom and student area orderliness.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Provide physical, therapeutic interventions, including restraint, when needed using CPI approved techniques.
  • Remain calm and emotionally available in volatile situations.
  • Participate as an effective team member.
  • Care for students as needed (diapering, feeding, handling bodily fluids, lifting/positioning).
  • Attend training sessions to maintain up‑to‑date understanding of special education students.
Additional Responsibilities

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Basic typing/keyboarding.
  • Previous experience working with students with emotional and behavioral disorders.
  • Experience developing and implementing behavior intervention plans.
  • Knowledge of child and adolescent mental health issues.
  • Knowledge of Collaborative Problem Solving techniques.
  • Experience working with students in academic areas or professional coursework in special education.
  • Strong communication skills with students, staff, and families.
  • Flexibility, initiative, and cooperativeness.
  • Physical strength to handle aggressive behavior.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive team relationships.
  • Problem‑solving skills during incidents.
  • Ability to work under constant interruption.
  • Readiness to learn computer skills and assistive technology.

Professional Development

Washington State Core Competencies should be completed within three years of hire.
