Special Education Para educator
Position Details- Department: Special Services
- Location: Frontier Middle School, Vancouver, Washington
- Hours / Work Times: 6 Hours Per Day (9:35 a.m. – 4:05 p.m., includes 30 minute unpaid lunch); 3.83 Hours on Early-Release Days (9:35 a.m. – 1:55 p.m., includes 30 minute unpaid time)
- Days per year: 190 days (180 student days + 10 holidays)
- Position Type: Part‑time, Permanent
- Starting Date: August 24, 2026
- Salary: $25.95 to $32.95 per hour (negotiated)
- Open until filled; up to 3 positions available
Under the supervision of the Special Education instructor and the building principal, the Special Education Para educator will assist in supervising instructional activities and work closely with students individually and in small groups.
Essential Functions- Provide special education services and supports to elementary and/or secondary students eligible for special education, under direction of the teacher or IEP manager.
- Communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents.
- Deliver one‑to‑one and group instruction as directed by the teacher to meet individual IEP goals.
- Assist in establishing and maintaining a learning environment as specified by curriculum goals.
- Assess student progress, evaluate learning, and collect student performance data to ensure progress toward IEP goals.
- Assist in administering and scoring formal and informal tests.
- Implement behavioral management strategies using classroom procedures established by the teacher.
- Assist in organizing and preparing instructional materials.
- Provide physical assistance as required (e.g., bathroom needs, lifting and changing students).
- Feed students as necessary and handle body fluids following safety protocols.
- Assist students with assistive technology and other related services (OT, PT, SLP).
- Attend training sessions to maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of special education needs.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Be at least 18 years of age and hold a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Meet at least one of the following:
- Pass a score of 455 or higher on the Education Testing Service Para Pro Assessment.
- Hold an Associate Degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
- Earn 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at 100 level or higher at an accredited college or university.
- Complete a Para educator Apprenticeship Program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council.
- Basic typing/keyboarding skills.
- Previous experience working with students in academic or special education settings.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents.
- Demonstrated ability to work with and supervise students.
- Flexibility, initiative, and cooperativeness.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Willingness to learn computer skills, assistive technology, and office equipment operation.
- Ability to perform under continuous interruptions and manage physical demands of the role.
- Physical strength and capacity to handle aggressive student behaviors when necessary.
- Positive teamwork and relationship‑building skills.
