Starting Date: Aug 24, 2026

Location: Wy'east Middle School, Vancouver, WA

Department: Special Services

Hours / Work Times: 6 Hours Per Day (9:35 a.m. – 4:05 p.m. includes 30 minute unpaid lunch); 3.83 Hours on Early-Release Days (9:35 a.m. – 1:55 p.m. includes 30 minute unpaid time); 190 Days Per Year (180 student days / 10 holidays)

Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Special Education instructor and the building Principal, the Special Education Para educator will assist in the supervision of instructional activities, working closely with students on an individual and small group basis.

Essential Functions
  • Under direction of the Special Education teacher or IEP manager, provide special education services and supports to elementary and/or secondary students eligible for special education.
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents.
  • Provide one-to-one and group instruction to students as directed by the teacher to meet IEP goals.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining a learning environment as specified by course goals and curriculum outcomes.
  • Assess student progress, evaluate learning, and collect student performance data to ensure progress toward each student’s IEP goals.
  • Assist in administering and scoring formal and informal tests.
  • Implement behavioral management strategies using the techniques outlined by the teacher.
  • Assist in organizing and preparing instructional materials.
  • Address students’ bathroom needs, including lifting and changing students as required.
  • Feed students as necessary.
  • Handle body fluids and lift/position students as necessary.
  • Provide services directed by related services providers (OT, PT, SLP).
  • Assist students with assistive technology, augmentative communication, or physical assist devices.
  • Attend training sessions as necessary to maintain understanding of student needs.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Be at least 18 years old and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Meet one or more of the following:
    • Score 455 or higher on the ETS Para Pro Assessment.
    • Hold an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
    • Earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at 100 level or higher.
    • Completed an approved Para educator Apprenticeship Program.
  • Basic typing and keyboarding skills.
  • Experience working with students in academic or special education settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and supervise students.
  • Initiative, flexibility, and cooperativeness.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Willingness to learn computer skills and assistive technology.
  • Physical strength to handle students and potential aggressive behavior.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced, interrupt‑driven environment.
  • Positive teamwork skills.
Salary and Benefits

Salary placement begins at the minimum hourly rate in the classification salary range. Experience credit may be applied for employees with prior service.

Eligible employees who work at least 630 hours in a school year receive medical, dental, vision, basic long‑term disability, basic life and AD&D insurance through SEBB. Additional benefits include FSA, DCAP, HSA, FPFSA, retirement, paid holidays, paid time off, and negotiated leave options available through the CBA.
