Reports To: Principal/Associate Principal/Transportation Director

Department: Elementary/Middle School

Hours / Work Times: .92 Hours Per Day (7:30 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. and 2:25 p.m. – 2:50 p.m.). .92 Hours Per Day Early Release Days (7:30 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. and 12:10 p.m. – 12:35 p.m.).

Days per Year: 190 (180 student days / 10 holidays)

Position Duration: Permanent

Classification Group: Service Workers Class I

Summary Statement

Under the supervision of the building Principal/Associate Principal/Transportation Manager, the traffic safety monitor provides safety support to the educational process by providing safe access to and from the school campus.

Essential Functions
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, and the general public.
  • Monitor and direct bus, parent, and/or visitor traffic.
  • Flag traffic as necessary to provide safe access and exit from campus to walking and riding students, in accordance with district training.
  • Carry out discipline procedures as defined by the building principal.
  • Record any student behavior that is not safe or appropriate and provide a written report to the principal.
  • Provide prudent safety‑related information to the Principal/Associate Principal.
  • Perform First Aid/CPR when necessary.

Tools and Equipment

Two‑way radio, paddle/flag for directing traffic, and all other tools and equipment necessary to perform the essential functions as listed above.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and the general public.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively apply techniques in working with students in the area of behavior management.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare legible reports/documents and give clear verbal instructions.
  • Knowledge of or willingness to become knowledgeable of the rights of students and legal aspects of the position.
  • Must be able to demonstrate honesty and integrity and be able to maintain confidentiality in handling security matters.
  • Must be able to demonstrate punctuality and dependability and work with minimal supervision.
  • Must possess or be able to acquire a First Aid/CPR card within 45 days of employment.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with others as part of a team.
