- Documentation verifying a high school diploma or GED.
- One of the following: official transcripts verifying an Associate's degree (90 quarter, 60 semester) or 72 quarter or 48 semester credits from an accredited university, college, community college or business school; or ETS Para Pro Assessment result of 461 or higher.
- One year of related experience working with children in an educational setting (preferred).
- Successful experience as part of an educational team (preferred).
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment, supporting classroom goals.
- Excellent problem‑solving, analytical, and conflict‑resolution skills and ability to think quickly.
- Effectively communicate with and appreciate individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Learn and use a computer monitor, keyboard, and appropriate adaptive technologies.
- Successfully implement educational programs and manage student behavior as directed by the teacher.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Adaptability with assigned tasks and schedules.
- Ability to lift, move, and physically restrain a child as required by the job.
- Independently and safely escort students around the school building and grounds.
- Observe student behavior visually and by listening.
- Regular attendance to carry out duties and responsibilities to achieve program requirements.
- Treat co‑workers, supervisors, students, parents and others with dignity and respect at all times.
- Serve as a positive role model for students and practice expected behaviors.
- Work flexibly and cooperatively.
- Support certificated staff members in developing goals for each student.
- Assist teachers in planning and evaluating learning goals and student progress.
- Oversee student behavior and assist during class activities.
- Assist with classroom activities or provide instruction to students in areas including academic subjects, basic life skills, social skills, and others assigned.
- Prepare teaching materials as directed.
- Assist with data entry, record keeping, and filing.
- Grade or correct papers and homework using a rubric or key.
- Supervise students as they enter or leave school grounds and other locations as directed.
- Attend training meetings to broaden expertise with students with special needs.
- Collect and share progress data.
- Use technology to collect Individualized Education Plan (IEP) data to inform work with students in goal areas.
- Lead small groups or individualized instruction in reading, writing, math, and social/behavioral skills.
- Support students in general education classrooms, adjusting, changing, or modifying assigned work and collaborating with general education teachers on accommodations and modifications.
- Communicate clearly with special education teacher regarding student behavior, progress, and needs.
- Implement suggestions and feedback from staff related to specific students.
- Implement behavior support plans for students with behavior needs.
- Perform other tasks and assume responsibilities as assigned by administrators in alignment with job classification.
- If asked to perform diapering duty, Special Program Para educator pay will apply.
Salary range:
New employees will start at the minimum hourly rate in the salary range. Employees with prior years of service in similar positions may receive experience credit toward salary placement.

Retirement:
Employees may be eligible for retirement benefits through the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS) based on FTE.
