Non-Exempt.

Qualifications
  • Documentation verifying a high school diploma or GED.
  • One of the following: official transcripts verifying an Associate's degree (90 quarter, 60 semester) or 72 quarter or 48 semester credits from an accredited university, college, community college or business school; or ETS Para Pro Assessment result of 461 or higher.
  • One year of related experience working with children in an educational setting (preferred).
  • Successful experience as part of an educational team (preferred).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment, supporting classroom goals.
  • Excellent problem‑solving, analytical, and conflict‑resolution skills and ability to think quickly.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Effectively communicate with and appreciate individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Learn and use a computer monitor, keyboard, and appropriate adaptive technologies.
  • Successfully implement educational programs and manage student behavior as directed by the teacher.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Adaptability with assigned tasks and schedules.
Other Requirements
  • Ability to lift, move, and physically restrain a child as required by the job.
  • Independently and safely escort students around the school building and grounds.
  • Observe student behavior visually and by listening.
  • Regular attendance to carry out duties and responsibilities to achieve program requirements.
Essential Functions
  • Treat co‑workers, supervisors, students, parents and others with dignity and respect at all times.
  • Serve as a positive role model for students and practice expected behaviors.
  • Work flexibly and cooperatively.
  • Support certificated staff members in developing goals for each student.
  • Assist teachers in planning and evaluating learning goals and student progress.
  • Oversee student behavior and assist during class activities.
  • Assist with classroom activities or provide instruction to students in areas including academic subjects, basic life skills, social skills, and others assigned.
  • Prepare teaching materials as directed.
  • Assist with data entry, record keeping, and filing.
  • Grade or correct papers and homework using a rubric or key.
  • Supervise students as they enter or leave school grounds and other locations as directed.
  • Attend training meetings to broaden expertise with students with special needs.
  • Collect and share progress data.
  • Use technology to collect Individualized Education Plan (IEP) data to inform work with students in goal areas.
  • Lead small groups or individualized instruction in reading, writing, math, and social/behavioral skills.
  • Support students in general education classrooms, adjusting, changing, or modifying assigned work and collaborating with general education teachers on accommodations and modifications.
  • Communicate clearly with special education teacher regarding student behavior, progress, and needs.
  • Implement suggestions and feedback from staff related to specific students.
  • Implement behavior support plans for students with behavior needs.
  • Perform other tasks and assume responsibilities as assigned by administrators in alignment with job classification.
  • If asked to perform diapering duty, Special Program Para educator pay will apply.
Benefits and Compensation

Salary range:
New employees will start at the minimum hourly rate in the salary range. Employees with prior years of service in similar positions may receive experience credit toward salary placement.

Benefits:
Employees who work at least 630 hours may be eligible for health, dental, vision, flexible spending accounts, life, and disability insurance benefits. Further eligibility criteria are detailed elsewhere.

Retirement:
Employees may be eligible for retirement benefits through the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS) based on FTE.

Time off:
Paid holidays and paid time off, including sick, vacation, personal, and bereavement leave. Additional negotiated leave options are found in the associated Comprehensive Professional Agreement (CPA) for this position.
